Stegra Partners with John Laing and Aquatech for Sustainable Water Treatment at World’s First Large-Scale Green Steel Plant

Stegra has announced a strategic partnership with John Laing, a leading international infrastructure investor, and Aquatech, a specialist in zero-liquid discharge water treatment, to design, build, finance, and operate a sustainable water treatment facility at Stegra’s groundbreaking green steel plant in Boden. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in sustainable industrial practices, as it supports the operation of the world’s first large-scale green steel plant, with production set to begin in 2026.

John Laing is making a long-term investment in the water treatment facility and has led the development of a water treatment services agreement, while Aquatech will be responsible for the plant’s design, construction, and operation under a 25-year service contract.

The facility will implement a comprehensive water management system, which includes treatments for ultra-pure water, wastewater recycling, zero liquid discharge, and water for cooling systems. It will provide demineralized water for the electrolyzers used to produce green hydrogen, as well as purified water for system cooling. The plant will also treat wastewater from the steel mill, recycling 99.9% of process water back into the system, contributing to the plant’s sustainable and efficient operations.

This partnership underscores the importance of sustainable water management in the decarbonization of the steel industry and will serve as a key infrastructure component in Stegra’s efforts to revolutionize green steel production.
