ABB’s advanced energy management system, ABB Ability™ OPTIMAX®, is set to play a pivotal role in Finland’s first industrial-scale green hydrogen production plant, marking a major milestone for the country and the broader Nordic region. The system will optimize production planning and energy market participation at P2X Solutions’ new Harjavalta facility, which is expected to begin operations by the end of 2024.
The Harjavalta plant, currently under commissioning by P2X Solutions, will be the first of its kind in Finland. It will open the door to the Finnish green hydrogen market and accelerate the production of hydrogen derivatives, including renewable synthetic methane, with its built-in methanation capacity. The facility supports P2X Solutions’ ambitious goal of achieving 1 GW of hydrogen production capacity by 2031 across multiple locations.
Tackling the Green Hydrogen Challenge
Green hydrogen, produced via electrolysis using renewable energy, is key to a low-carbon future. However, high production costs and energy-intensive processes have historically limited its market availability. To address these challenges, ABB Ability™ OPTIMAX® will be instrumental in increasing energy efficiency and optimizing energy flows at the Harjavalta plant. The software will enable P2X Solutions to strategically manage energy assets and trade competitively with the grid through day-ahead and intraday planning.
By regulating power usage and monitoring energy flows, OPTIMAX® will help lower the cost of green hydrogen production while enhancing the operational efficiency of electrolyzer modules. This transparent system will ensure optimal performance, safety, and efficiency at the plant, aligning with the broader goal of making green hydrogen a viable and accessible energy source.
The Harjavalta plant represents a significant step in Finland’s transition to a low-carbon economy, with ABB Ability™ OPTIMAX® playing a key role in that journey. The project will also contribute to the development of expertise in green hydrogen both locally and internationally, paving the way for future plants in Joensuu and Oulu.
