Air Liquide and H2 MOBILITY Partner to Deliver Certified Renewable Hydrogen for Refuelling Network in Germany’s Rhine-Ruhr Region

In a major step toward climate-neutral mobility, Air Liquide and H2 MOBILITY have signed a multi-year supply agreement for certified RFNBO renewable hydrogen* to serve hydrogen refuelling stations in the Rhine-Ruhr region. The deal underpins Germany’s ambition to decarbonize its transport sector—especially in one of the country’s most industrialized and densely populated areas.

Under this strategic agreement, Air Liquide will supply up to 1,000 tons of renewable hydrogen per year from its Trailblazer electrolyzer facility in Oberhausen to H2 MOBILITY’s network of hydrogen refuelling stations for trucks and buses. This certified green hydrogen will begin powering the first stations in the region as early as summer 2025.

Trailblazer: Germany’s Largest Renewable Hydrogen Plant

Air Liquide’s 20 MW Trailblazer electrolyzer is the largest facility of its kind in Germany and is fully integrated into the region’s existing hydrogen infrastructure. It can produce up to 2,900 tons of renewable hydrogen annually, serving multiple sectors including transport, steel, chemicals, and refining.

In April 2025, Air Liquide became the first company in Germany to obtain official RFNBO certification—based on the European Commission-approved ISCC EU scheme—for its hydrogen production at Trailblazer. RFNBO (Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin) is the gold standard for sustainable hydrogen, requiring 100% renewable power input and full lifecycle emissions tracking.

Supporting Germany’s Climate and Mobility Goals

This agreement aligns with Germany’s broader energy transition goals and marks a significant advancement in the rollout of hydrogen-powered transport. The Rhine-Ruhr area, known for its industrial and logistics activity, is a key strategic location for accelerating hydrogen adoption in heavy-duty mobility.

Oliver Meier, Director of Hydrogen Energy Central Europe at Air Liquide, commented:

“This partnership with H2 MOBILITY represents another concrete step toward decarbonizing freight and public transport. Our role as a full-service hydrogen supplier—from production to delivery—allows us to offer cost-effective, reliable solutions that meet the growing demand for clean energy.”

Frank Fronzke, COO of H2 MOBILITY, added:

“Our goal is to operate all of our refuelling stations with renewable hydrogen by 2028. This agreement with Air Liquide gets us significantly closer to that target. It ensures that customers in the Rhine-Ruhr region can begin refuelling with RFNBO-certified hydrogen as early as this summer.”

A Strong Foundation for a Clean Hydrogen Economy

The collaboration also underscores the importance of partnerships in building a robust hydrogen value chain—from production and certification to distribution and end use. Air Liquide, a founding partner of H2 MOBILITY, continues to invest in large-scale hydrogen infrastructure, while H2 MOBILITY remains Europe’s largest operator of hydrogen refuelling stations.
