Vireon, a subsidiary of Norwegian Hydrogen and a leading hydrogen refueling company in the Nordics, has been awarded a €9.2 million grant by the European Union. This funding is set to revolutionize the green hydrogen infrastructure by constructing production and refueling stations for heavy-duty vehicles across Finland and Denmark, marking a significant advance in Vireon’s effort to decarbonize Europe’s transportation sector. This EU grant, the second for Norwegian Hydrogen following a €9 million award earlier this year for a project in Denmark, totals a substantial investment in the company’s green hydrogen initiatives. Jens Berge, CEO of Norwegian Hydrogen, expressed pride in this dual achievement, emphasizing its impact on strengthening their leadership in the green energy transition. The project plans include a 5 MW electrolyzer and an extensive network of green hydrogen refueling stations extending from Northern Finland through Sweden and Denmark into continental Europe. This network will support the zero-emission transportation corridor for heavy-duty vehicles. The funded initiative will facilitate the construction of seven stations across the two countries, enhancing access for both passenger and commercial vehicles. In Finland, the stations will be strategically placed in Tornio, Liminka, Jyväskylä, and the greater Helsinki area. In Denmark, stations will arise in northern Jutland, Vejle, and Padborg. Per Øyvind Voie, Managing Director of Vireon, highlighted the readiness to build these stations in anticipation of hydrogen trucks expected to hit the market by 2025. The project is supported by the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), which aligns with the European Green Deal’s objectives. CEF’s commitment to fostering sustainable and interconnected trans-European networks is pivotal to Europe’s broader decarbonization goals, aiming for a sustainable future by 2030 and 2050. Established in 2023, Vireon is at the forefront of the hydrogen refueling industry in the Nordics, focusing on heavy-duty transport. With a strong presence in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland, and backed by significant EU funding, Vireon is poised to play a crucial role in enabling zero-emission solutions for the region’s transport sector.

Accelera™ by Cummins, the zero-emissions arm of Cummins Inc. [NYSE: CMI], has announced its partnership with Chevron New Energies to provide a cutting-edge 5-megawatt (MW) electrolyzer system for producing low carbon intensity (LCI) hydrogen in Lost Hills, CA. This initiative marks a significant step towards expanding the hydrogen infrastructure in the United States and aligns with the collaborative efforts of Cummins and Chevron to foster the adoption of hydrogen, renewable natural gas, and various other low-carbon fuels across North America. Set to be powered by solar energy and utilizing non-potable water from Chevron's Lost Hills Oil Field in Kern County, the facility will feature two Accelera proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers. These systems are designed to generate over 2 tons of hydrogen daily at fuel-cell-grade purity, sufficient to power 80 freight trucks for up to 600 miles each. Andreas Lippert, Vice President and General Manager of Electrolyzers for Accelera, expressed enthusiasm about deepening their collaboration with Chevron, emphasizing the project's role in promoting the hydrogen ecosystem and reducing emissions. Electrolyzers, by using electricity to separate water into hydrogen and oxygen, offer a path to emissions-free hydrogen when powered by renewable sources such as wind or solar. This green hydrogen serves as a clean, high-density energy source for various transportation and industrial applications. Accelera's electrolyzer technology is already operational in over 60 hydrogen refueling stations worldwide, including the world's first multimodal station in Antwerp, Belgium, capable of servicing cars, trucks, buses, and ships. Notably, Accelera powers one of the largest PEM electrolyzer systems globally in Bécancour, Quebec; a 25MW system for Florida Power & Light Company's Cavendish NextGen Hydrogen Hub set to launch in early 2024; and a 90MW system for Varennes Carbon Recycling in Quebec, aiming to convert non-recyclable waste into biofuels and circular chemicals.
