TotalEnergies is taking a significant step toward its 2030 goal of decarbonizing hydrogen use in its European refineries by partnering with Air Liquide to produce renewable hydrogen at its La Mède biorefinery in southeast France. This project complements the ongoing Masshylia green hydrogen initiative led by TotalEnergies in collaboration with ENGIE. Together, these projects will reduce annual CO₂ emissions at La Mède by 130,000 tons, advancing regional and corporate decarbonization goals. A Renewable Hydrogen Hub at La Mède Air Liquide will construct and operate a renewable hydrogen production unit at La Mède with an annual capacity of 25,000 tons. The facility will utilize coproducts from TotalEnergies’ biorefinery to produce hydrogen, which will then fuel the production of biodiesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The project represents a €150 million investment shared between TotalEnergies and Air Liquide and is expected to commence operations in 2028. Vincent Stoquart, President, Refining & Chemicals at TotalEnergies, highlighted the project's significance: “This new renewable hydrogen production project with Air Liquide accelerates the decarbonization of our La Mède platform. Nearly a decade after its conversion, La Mède is evolving into a low-carbon hydrogen production hub, contributing to the sustainability goals of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region.” The Masshylia Green Hydrogen Project In parallel, TotalEnergies and ENGIE are advancing the Masshylia green hydrogen project, which will utilize water electrolysis to produce 10,000 tons of green hydrogen annually. This hydrogen will support decarbonization efforts at both La Mède and the Fos-Berre industrial-port zone. The first phase of the project, involving a 20 MW electrolyzer, is expected to start by 2029, contingent on the approval of subsidies and public authorizations from European and French authorities. TotalEnergies’ Commitment to Decarbonizing European Refineries As part of its broader sustainability strategy, TotalEnergies is committed to reducing the carbon footprint of its energy production and refining processes. By scaling the use of low-carbon hydrogen, the company aims to cut CO₂ emissions from its European refineries by approximately three million tons annually by 2030. As part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced up to $2.2 billion in funding for the Gulf Coast Hydrogen Hub (HyVelocity) and Midwest Hydrogen Hub (MachH2). These initiatives are critical components of DOE’s Hydrogen Hubs (H2Hubs) program, a cornerstone of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, designed to establish a national network of clean hydrogen production, storage, and distribution. This transformative investment underscores the administration’s commitment to bolstering energy security, driving economic growth, creating high-quality jobs, and advancing decarbonization to combat climate change. Key Objectives of the Hydrogen Hubs Program Clean hydrogen is a versatile energy carrier that can be produced from diverse domestic resources, including renewables, nuclear, and fossil fuels with carbon capture. Its ability to decarbonize energy-intensive sectors such as chemicals, steel, and transportation makes it a linchpin of the clean energy transition. The seven awarded H2Hubs are projected to collectively: Produce millions of metric tons of hydrogen annually. Eliminate tens of millions of metric tons of CO₂ emissions, equivalent to taking millions of gas-powered cars off the road. Create and sustain tens of thousands of good-paying jobs across the country. Gulf Coast Hydrogen Hub (HyVelocity) Location: Texas. Focus: Leverages abundant renewable energy and natural gas resources to produce clean hydrogen via electrolysis and natural gas reforming with carbon capture and storage. Impact: Supports regional decarbonization while driving down hydrogen production costs. Job Creation: Approximately 45,000 direct jobs over the project’s lifetime. Midwest Hydrogen Hub (MachH2) Location: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Michigan. Focus: Uses wind, natural gas, and nuclear energy to produce hydrogen for key industries, including steel, manufacturing, and transportation. Impact: Facilitates decarbonization of heavy industries in a vital U.S. industrial corridor. Job Creation: Approximately 12,000 direct jobs over the project’s lifetime. A Milestone for Clean Energy and Job Creation “These hydrogen hubs mark a major milestone in the DOE’s efforts to kickstart a domestic hydrogen industry that strengthens America’s energy security and global competitiveness while tackling the climate crisis,” said U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm. “This investment aligns with our commitment to secure, affordable, and cleaner energy for all Americans.” The H2Hubs program is among the largest federal investments in clean manufacturing, with DOE funding matched by recipient contributions to unlock billions in private sector investment. SEFE Securing Energy for Europe, Eletrobras, and EnerTech have announced an ambitious partnership to deliver 200,000 tons of green hydrogen annually from Brazil to Germany and Europe starting in 2030. The collaboration marks a major milestone in advancing global decarbonization efforts, leveraging Brazil’s vast hydropower resources and SEFE’s expertise in European energy markets. Under a Joint Study Agreement (JSA) signed in Berlin, the partners will develop a green hydrogen production project in Brazil, powered by hydropower and other renewable sources. SEFE will handle the conversion of hydrogen to green ammonia for efficient shipping to Germany, where it will be processed and supplied to European customers via a dedicated hydrogen infrastructure. A Green Hydrogen Bridge Between Continents This partnership unites industry leaders with a shared vision of sustainable energy: Eletrobras, Brazil’s premier renewable energy company, generates more than 90% of its electricity from clean hydropower. EnerTech, a Kuwaiti company specializing in sustainable infrastructure, initiated the partnership and brings expertise in hydrogen development. SEFE, committed to securing Europe’s energy supply and leading the energy transition, will exclusively market and distribute the hydrogen in Europe. Leaders’ Perspectives on the Collaboration Dr. Egbert Laege, CEO of SEFE, highlighted the significance of the agreement: “This is our first partnership with South America and the regional leader in renewable energy. By investing in green hydrogen production and adding these supplies to our portfolio, we are achieving our dual goal of securing Europe’s energy supply and advancing the energy transition.” Hamead Ahrary, CSO at SEFE, added: “This collaboration with Eletrobras and EnerTech allows us to offer our customers competitive and innovative solutions to decarbonize their operations.
