Colombia and Germany have recently inked an agreement to collaborate on the promotion and development of the green hydrogen industry. The memorandum of understanding was signed by Irene Vélez, the Minister of Mines and Energy of Colombia, and Germán Umaña, the Minister of Commerce, Industry, and Tourism. The agreement also involves the renowned German research organization Fraunhofer, which will analyze the production of green hydrogen and its derivatives in Colombia with the potential for export to Germany.
The signing of this agreement took place during the visit of Colombia’s President, Gustavo Petro, to Germany. The collaboration aims to explore the potential for the Caribbean region of Colombia to become a significant industrial hub for hydrogen production. The region’s ample wind and solar resources make it an ideal candidate to deliver substantial volumes of hydrogen to both domestic and international markets at competitive prices.
Fraunhofer Society, known for its leading role in applied research across Europe, brings valuable expertise to the partnership. With offices in various countries, including the United States, Brazil, South Africa, Israel, China, and India, Fraunhofer’s studies, conducted last December, laid the groundwork for this collaborative effort.
The memorandum emphasizes Colombia’s commitment to the ambitious development of hydrogen as a vital energy resource. It identifies the strategic industrial area of Cartagena as a potential future hub for large-scale hydrogen production, leveraging the region’s exceptional wind and solar resources. This collaboration opens up opportunities for Colombia to establish itself as a prominent player in the green hydrogen market.
Expressing her gratitude for the partnership, Minister of Mines and Energy Irene Vélez believes that this collaboration marks the beginning of a new path toward a more sustainable planet.
