De Nora Commissions 1 MW Green Hydrogen Electrolyser for Industrial Operations in Sardinia

Industrie De Nora and Maffei Sarda Silicati have completed the installation and commissioning of a 1 MW green hydrogen electrolyser in Sardinia, marking a new step in the deployment of renewable hydrogen for Italian industrial applications.

Installed at Maffei Sarda Silicati’s production facility in Florinas, near Sassari, the Dragonfly® electrolyser supplied by De Nora is designed to produce up to 50 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. The hydrogen will be used in industrial operations at the site, supporting efforts to reduce emissions from production processes.

Maffei Sarda Silicati specialises in the extraction, processing and commercialisation of raw materials for the ceramics and glass industries. De Nora, meanwhile, is an Italian electrochemistry and water treatment technology company that is expanding its activities in equipment for green hydrogen production.

The companies have now completed installation, testing and commissioning of the hydrogen system, with the formal handover following certification of the installation and testing activities. Make Energy participated in the project as technical advisor.

The development has received support through Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and is intended to contribute to several of the programme’s energy-transition objectives, including industrial decarbonisation, the redevelopment of brownfield sites and the deployment of innovative clean-energy technologies.

The project is also significant for De Nora’s emerging electrolyser manufacturing operations in Italy. The 1 MW system is among the first electrolysers to have been designed, assembled and tested at the company’s new Gigafactory in Cernusco sul Naviglio.

The manufacturing site forms part of De Nora’s industrial expansion under the Hy2Tech Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) and other initiatives supporting the development of Italy’s hydrogen supply chain. The Sardinian installation therefore provides an early industrial reference as production at the new factory gradually ramps up.

For Maffei Sarda Silicati, introducing locally produced green hydrogen represents part of a broader transition toward lower-emission industrial processes. The project demonstrates how relatively small-scale electrolysis systems can be integrated directly into industrial sites, bringing renewable hydrogen production closer to the point of consumption.

The partners see green hydrogen as a potential tool for reducing industrial emissions while developing a stronger domestic hydrogen ecosystem. With the Dragonfly system now installed and commissioned, the Florinas project provides a practical example of green hydrogen moving from technology manufacturing into industrial deployment in Italy.
