Green Cat Hydrogen Launches Public Consultation for New Green Hydrogen Facility at Chapelcross

Green Cat Hydrogen (GCH) has announced plans for a new green hydrogen production facility beside Chapelcross, near Creca, Dumfries and Galloway. The project, which is subject to planning approval, will be developed within South of Scotland Enterprise’s Energy Transition Zone and aims to play a pivotal role in decarbonizing local industries while driving economic growth.

If approved, the multi-million-pound facility will produce over 4,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year, leading to an annual CO₂ reduction of up to 26,000 tonnes—equivalent to planting 20,000 hectares of broadleaf forest.

Economic and Employment Impact

The project is expected to generate approximately 150 jobs during construction and 50 permanent high-skilled jobs once operational. It will also serve as a catalyst for further investment in Chapelcross, aligning with the site’s long-term Green Energy Hub masterplan, which aims to transform the local economy through hydrogen production, storage, advanced manufacturing, and logistics.

Gavin Catto, CEO at Green Cat Hydrogen, commented:

“This project is a major step in turning Chapelcross into a key hub for green hydrogen. Green hydrogen is essential for decarbonizing sectors that are difficult to electrify, and we are committed to working with the local community to make this vision a reality.”
