H2APEX Acquires HH2E’s Lubmin Hydrogen Project, Doubling Down on Green Hydrogen Expansion in Germany

H2APEX, a 100% subsidiary of H2APEX Group SCA (ISIN: LU0472835155), has announced the acquisition of HH2E Lubminwerk GmbH and its associated hydrogen production project in Lubmin. With this move, H2APEX significantly expands its footprint in one of Germany’s most strategically important hydrogen regions.

The newly acquired project includes the land, infrastructure, and all necessary utility connections—electricity, water, and direct pipeline access—which will be repurposed for hydrogen transport as part of Germany’s upcoming core hydrogen network by 2027. The Lubmin site, located near the Baltic Sea at the site of a former nuclear power plant, offers ideal conditions for green hydrogen production due to its proximity to offshore wind farms and strong energy infrastructure.

“By acquiring HH2E’s Lubmin project, we’re securing a pivotal location in Germany’s hydrogen future,” said Peter Rößner, CEO of H2APEX. “This strengthens our position not just nationally but on an international scale, enhancing efficiency and synergies across our operations. It’s a key milestone in our strategy to accelerate and scale in-house hydrogen production.”

Two Major Projects, One Strategic Hub

H2APEX now operates two parallel green hydrogen projects in Lubmin:

  • Existing H2APEX Lubmin Electrolysis Plant: Already in development since 2023, with a 100 MW Phase 1 set for completion in 2028, and long-term expansion to 600 MW.

  • Newly Acquired HH2E Project: Now being integrated into the company’s portfolio, it will also begin with a 100 MW installation, with mid-term plans to expand to 1,000 MW of total capacity.

Both projects will use electricity sourced entirely from renewable energy—primarily wind and solar from northern Germany—making the hydrogen output 100% green.

Scaling Hydrogen with Strategic Vision

This acquisition aligns with H2APEX’s strategy to consolidate the hydrogen market during a period of industry shakeout. The company sees growing opportunities to absorb projects from competitors exiting the sector and anticipates generating the bulk of its revenue from owning and operating its own production facilities. This shift ensures predictable cash flows, greater scalability, and a solid foundation for long-term sustainable growth.

The first phase of investment for the acquired project will total a three-digit million-euro sum, covering infrastructure upgrades, permitting, feasibility studies, and staffing. H2APEX will lead the construction and operation phases internally, drawing on deep technical expertise and a proven partner network. Notable examples of its execution capability include the Rostock-Laage facility, as well as its role in Germany’s flagship projects “H2-Wyhlen” and “HyBit” in Bremen.

With this acquisition, H2APEX further cements its role as a key player in the European hydrogen transition and positions itself to become a leading supplier of green hydrogen for industrial and energy applications across the continent.
