Haffner Energy and HRS Partner to Commercialize Biomass-Derived Green Hydrogen in France

By Greenh2 team • October 1, 2026 • 2 min read

Clean energy pioneer Haffner Energy has announced the installation of an HRS-supplied H14 hydrogen refueling station at its Marolles facility. The site will combine local hydrogen production from residual biomass with distribution infrastructure, enabling Haffner Energy to demonstrate the commercial competitiveness of its biomass-derived hydrogen under real-world market conditions while generating recurring revenue.

The H14 station—capable of dispensing up to 14 kg of hydrogen per hour—will compress onsite hydrogen for 350-bar and 700-bar vehicle refueling, buffer storage, and tube trailer filling for transport to offsite industrial consumers. Scheduled for deployment in 2027 pending standard ICPE regulatory approvals, the project marks a concrete step in Haffner Energy’s strategic pivot toward becoming an independent energy producer alongside its core technology supply business.

Operational and Commercial Objectives

  • Financial Self-Sufficiency: Revenue generated from green hydrogen sales will cover operating expenditures at the Marolles site, transforming it into a self-funding operational showcase and training hub.

  • Cost Competitiveness: Haffner Energy aims to prove that continuous, mobility-grade hydrogen produced from residual biomass via its thermolysis process can match fossil fuel price points—offering a cost-effective alternative to electrolysis.

  • System Integration: Over 85% of the total equipment value from biomass conversion to delivery-ready fuel is already paid for or installed at the Marolles facility following the recent commissioning of its H6 production module.

Expanding into Core100 Projects and Data Centers

The agreement strengthens the broader commercial partnership between Haffner Energy and HRS (Hydrogen Refueling Solutions). Beyond the Marolles site, Haffner Energy plans to integrate HRS refueling units across its upcoming CORE100 project pipeline, delivering turnkey production, storage, and refueling infrastructure to third-party operators.

The two companies are also targeting the rapidly growing data center market. By pairing Haffner Energy’s local biomass-to-energy systems with HRS’s Secure Power Unit (SPU)—a modular hydrogen storage and fuel cell backup solution—the partnership offers zero-emission emergency power systems designed to meet stringent Tier III and Tier IV uptime standards (exceeding 99.995% availability).

“Combining our H6 module with HRS’s H14 station will enable us to put our hydrogen to the test under real market conditions and demonstrate, in concrete terms and over the long term, its competitiveness with both fossil-based and electrolytic hydrogen,” stated Philippe Haffner, co-founder and CEO of Haffner Energy.

Hassen Rachedi, Chairman and CEO of HRS, added: “Reducing production costs and bringing hydrogen production closer to end users are two essential conditions for the development of hydrogen mobility and industrial applications. Data centers also represent a particularly promising market where the complementary nature of our solutions enables us to address very high availability requirements.”
