Hycamite TCD Technologies, a leader in emissions-free methane-splitting, has inaugurated Europe’s largest methane-splitting facility in Kokkola, Finland. Once fully operational, the plant will have the capacity to produce 2,000 tonnes of low-carbon hydrogen and 6,000 tonnes of high-quality carbon annually.
The facility, called the Customer Sample Facility (CSF), is set to cut carbon emissions by up to 18,000 tonnes of CO2 annually when using liquefied natural gas (LNG) as feedstock. When biomethane is used, the hydrogen production becomes carbon-negative, showcasing its potential for environmental impact.
“Our CSF proves the feasibility of large-scale methane-splitting technology, and we plan to expand this innovative approach globally,” said Hycamite CEO Laura Rahikka.
Hycamite’s technology efficiently decomposes methane into hydrogen and carbon, without releasing greenhouse gases. The green hydrogen produced can serve as an industrial raw material or as a fuel, with the process consuming only 13% of the energy needed for hydrogen production through electrolysis. The technology can scale rapidly, using feedstocks such as natural gas, biomethane, or synthetic natural gas.
Located near Hycamite’s headquarters and its smaller test facility within Kokkola Industrial Park, Europe’s largest inorganic chemical industry hub, the CSF benefits from proximity to key industrial partners.
Hycamite’s innovative carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology solidifies carbon for industrial use in products such as graphite, including battery-grade materials. With sustainable and recyclable catalysts, Hycamite offers scalable, tailored solutions to help industries lower their emissions.
