HydePoint AS, a Norwegian innovator in marine-based hydrogen solutions, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Nel Hydrogen, a global leader in electrolyser technologies. The agreement marks a major advancement in the push to deliver scalable, modular green hydrogen production systems designed for offshore, nearshore, and extreme environments.
Aimed at Industrial-Scale Renewable Hydrogen Production
At the heart of the collaboration is the integration of Nel’s Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyser stacks into HydePoint’s next-generation hydrogen systems. The joint goal is to co-develop ruggedized and modular solutions that maintain high efficiency and durability under challenging environmental conditions—enabling the production of green hydrogen at industrial scale alongside wind and solar assets at sea and along coastlines.
Elin Steinsland, CEO of HydePoint AS, stated:
“This partnership is a critical step forward in accelerating offshore hydrogen production. Combining Nel’s proven PEM technology with HydePoint’s innovative system design will help overcome key deployment challenges in harsh marine environments.”
Todd Cartwright, Chief Commercial Officer at Nel Hydrogen, added:
“HydePoint’s vision aligns well with our strategy to support scalable, flexible hydrogen generation. Offshore and nearshore production is an exciting frontier, and we see strong synergies in delivering clean energy where it’s needed most.”
Driving Down the Cost of Green Hydrogen
As part of their shared strategy, the companies will work to lower the Levelized Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH) by optimizing system integration and resilience. This includes advancing deployment strategies that can be co-located with renewable energy infrastructure such as offshore wind farms, enabling direct, efficient conversion of renewable electricity into hydrogen—a key enabler for decarbonizing hard-to-abate industries like shipping, chemicals, and steel.
A Strategic Boost for the Offshore Hydrogen Economy
With growing momentum behind offshore hydrogen projects globally, this collaboration places HydePoint and Nel Hydrogen at the forefront of a rapidly emerging market. The companies aim to leverage their combined expertise to deliver solutions that are not only technically robust but also commercially viable, helping accelerate the global transition to clean energy.
The agreement also supports Norway’s strategic focus on becoming a leader in renewable hydrogen production and export, particularly through its vast offshore wind and marine infrastructure potential.
