ITM Power and Deutsche Bahn Join Forces to Accelerate Green Hydrogen in Transport and Infrastructure

ITM Power has signed a landmark agreement with Deutsche Bahn AG (DB) to collaborate on sustainable transportation and infrastructure, with a strong focus on green hydrogen and renewable energy solutions. The partnership marks a significant step toward transforming Europe’s mobility and rail infrastructure into a climate-neutral system.

As one of Europe’s largest transport and rail operators, Deutsche Bahn is committed to becoming climate-neutral by 2040. A major component of its strategy is the adoption of zero-emission technologies, particularly through the conversion of its vast fleet of trains, buses, and trucks to low- and zero-emission vehicles, powered by green fuels.

This strategic partnership will focus on five core areas:

  1. Decarbonisation Technologies
Deepening the mutual understanding of each company’s technologies aimed at decarbonising rail transport and mobility services.

  2. Green Mobility Solutions
Sharing expertise on the use of green hydrogen across DB’s locomotive, bus, and truck fleets, and exploring potential joint projects in green transport, infrastructure, and refuelling networks.

  3. Zero-Emission Operations
Developing pathways for the transition to zero-emission operations, including sourcing, storing, and integrating green fuels like hydrogen.

  4. Energy Resilience & Self-Sufficiency
Exploring solutions that enhance the energy independence of transport infrastructure, including pilot projects in the railway sector.

  5. Green Fuel Logistics & Supply Chains
Building a deep understanding of the hydrogen supply chain across Germany, Europe, and globally—supporting the transport and logistics of green fuels for DB and the wider market.

“Deutsche Bahn has an ambitious roadmap to build a climate-friendly rail system and lead the transport of green fuels across Germany,” said Dennis Schulz, CEO of ITM Power. “We’re proud to partner with them to accelerate the rollout of sustainable mobility solutions at the heart of Europe.”

Niko Warbanoff, CEO of DB E.C.O. Group, added: “As part of Deutsche Bahn, we are actively driving innovation in green energy, decarbonisation, and sustainable infrastructure. This partnership with ITM Power is an exciting step toward reshaping rail and transport systems in Germany and globally.”

This partnership underscores the growing momentum around green hydrogen as a cornerstone of Europe’s decarbonisation strategy—particularly in sectors that are difficult to electrify, such as heavy-duty transport and rail. By combining ITM Power’s cutting-edge electrolysis technology with DB’s expansive infrastructure and operational expertise, the collaboration aims to unlock scalable, real-world hydrogen solutions that support a cleaner, more resilient future.
