KK Wind Solutions Powers Green Hydrogen Expansion with Largest-Ever Electrolyzer Supply for Sunfire

KK Wind Solutions, a €1 billion renewable energy technology company owned by A.P. Moller Holding, is expanding into the green hydrogen market, leveraging its decades of expertise in power converter systems for the wind industry. The company’s mission to enable a more sustainable future through renewable energy now includes support for sectors where direct electrification is not viable—by converting renewable electricity into storable, versatile green hydrogen.

As part of this strategic move, KK Wind Solutions will supply 10 custom Power Supply Units for a 100 MW pressurized alkaline electrolyzer under development by Sunfire, a global leader in electrolysis technologies. These units are engineered to Sunfire’s specific requirements, ensuring maximum hydrogen production efficiency and minimized operating costs.

“As a leading supplier of power conversion systems and with the support of our long-term owner, we are ideally positioned to deliver key technologies for the green hydrogen sector,” said René Balle, Chief Commercial Officer of KK Wind Solutions. “This project reinforces our strong collaboration with Sunfire and highlights our ability to provide customized solutions that align with both electrolyzer and grid specifications.”

Scaling From Pilot to Industrial-Scale Hydrogen

The new supply agreement builds on the success of a 2023 pilot, in which KK Wind Solutions delivered two 5 MW Power Supply Units for Sunfire’s 10 MW electrolyzer. Insights from that project have informed the design of the scaled-up 10 MW units for the new system.

Each Power Supply Unit in the 100 MW project includes transformers, rectifiers, AC connections, and cooling systems, forming a turnkey solution that ensures reliable DC power for the electrolyzer. KK Wind Solutions will also provide end-to-end engineering support, including installation supervision, commissioning, and ongoing maintenance—making this the largest hydrogen-related contract in the company’s history.

Supporting Hydrogen at Scale

With more than 25 years of power conversion experience and over 30,000 units delivered in the wind sector, KK Wind Solutions brings proven industrial scale to the emerging hydrogen market. Its power supply units convert alternating current (AC) from the grid into direct current (DC), which electrolyzers use to split water into green hydrogen.

The company’s 15 GW+ annual production capacity positions it to support the rapid deployment of green hydrogen infrastructure needed for global decarbonization.

About Sunfire

Sunfire develops and manufactures industrial electrolyzers based on pressurized alkaline and solid oxide (SOEC) technologies. These systems generate renewable hydrogen and syngas as climate-neutral alternatives to fossil fuels, enabling the decarbonization of heavy industry. With a workforce of over 650 employees in Germany and Switzerland, Sunfire is helping to shape the future of clean energy across Europe and beyond.

Together, KK Wind Solutions and Sunfire are setting a new benchmark for scalable, efficient green hydrogen production—paving the way for a cleaner, fossil-free industrial future.
