Lhyfe (EURONEXT: LHYFE), a pioneer in renewable hydrogen production for industry and mobility, has secured RFNBO (Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin) certification for all four of its currently operational production sites in France and Germany. With a combined installed capacity of 21 MW, Lhyfe is now Europe’s leading producer of RFNBO-certified hydrogen from water electrolysis, both in terms of capacity and number of certified facilities.
The newly certified sites — Buléon (5 MW) in Bretagne, Bessières (5 MW) in Occitanie, and Schwäbisch Gmünd (10 MW) in Baden-Württemberg, Germany — join Lhyfe’s Bouin site (1 MW) in Pays de la Loire, which became the first French hydrogen site to receive RFNBO certification in May 2025. Together, these four plants can produce up to 8.3 tonnes of green hydrogen daily. Schwäbisch Gmünd, Lhyfe’s largest facility to date, is also Germany’s second-largest RFNBO-certified hydrogen site and will be formally inaugurated in October 2025.
RFNBO certification, awarded under the European Renewable Energy Directive (RED III), sets the EU’s strictest standard for renewable hydrogen. It ensures compliance with traceability, sustainability, and environmental requirements defined under the EU Taxonomy. By integrating certification into its customer guarantees, Lhyfe can now provide full proof of the renewable origin of its hydrogen, enabling customers to qualify for European and national support schemes.
With a network of distributed facilities and a fleet of nearly 70 modern Type 4 hydrogen containers, Lhyfe also operates one of the largest bulk hydrogen distribution platforms in Europe. This enables efficient regional delivery and strengthens supply security for industries and mobility operators transitioning to low-carbon energy. Current RFNBO-certified deliveries already support applications in mobility, industry, storage testing, boilers, and construction equipment.
“This certification is a key milestone – it validates the robustness of our industrial model, confirms our technological and regulatory lead, and above all proves that local production of truly renewable and traceable hydrogen is now possible on a large scale in Europe,” said Matthieu Guesné, founder and CEO of Lhyfe. “Our achievements demonstrate that large-scale deployment is not just a vision but a reality, helping Europe accelerate its decarbonisation and energy sovereignty.”
To secure certification, Lhyfe worked with key partners including Atmen, whose compliance automation platform provides advanced traceability; CertifHy, one of the first certification schemes approved by the European Commission; and TÜV SÜD, among the first certification bodies accredited to certify under CertifHy’s RFNBO framework.
By scaling its RFNBO-certified bulk hydrogen offering, Lhyfe continues to reinforce its leadership role in Europe’s hydrogen transition, bringing renewable, verifiable, and transportable hydrogen closer to end-users across industries and borders.
