Maruti Suzuki Commissions 300 kW Green Hydrogen Plant at Manesar Facility

By Greenh2 team • September 28, 2026 • 2 min read

India’s leading automaker, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, has commissioned a pilot 300 kW green hydrogen ($GH_2$) electrolyzer plant at its manufacturing facility in Manesar, Haryana.

The green hydrogen produced at the site will be blended with natural gas to serve as a clean process fuel across the company’s vehicle manufacturing operations.

The pilot project is specifically designed to maximize local renewable energy efficiency by channeling surplus power from the plant’s existing solar generation infrastructure. Solar energy generated on facility holidays—which previously went unutilized—will now power the electrolyzer to produce and store green hydrogen for weekday factory use.

Alignment with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission

The initiative aligns with the Government of India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and forms part of Maruti Suzuki’s broader target to reduce its manufacturing carbon footprint from 615,000 tonnes to 266,000 tonnes by FY 2030–31.

“Just like we have adopted a multi-pathway approach for products, we have also embarked on a journey of multiple renewable energy solutions for manufacturing operations,” said Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO of Maruti Suzuki India Limited. “India is emerging as a manufacturing powerhouse, and its competitive position may not depend solely on cost and quality, but also on $\text{CO}_2$ intensity.”

Takeuchi added that insights gained from the 300 kW pilot will guide future, larger-scale deployments of green hydrogen technology across the company’s primary manufacturing hubs in Haryana and Gujarat.

Multi-Pronged Decarbonization Strategy

The green hydrogen pilot is part of a wider portfolio of clean energy investments by Maruti Suzuki and its parent company, Suzuki Motor Corporation:

  • Biogas Integration: The company is in the advanced stages of installing a 10 Tonnes Per Day (TPD) biogas plant at its Kharkhoda facility, scheduled for commissioning in FY 2026–27. Maruti Suzuki’s board also recently approved INR 5,610 million (~$67 million) for four additional compressed biogas (CBG) projects.

  • Energy Storage: The automaker recently commissioned a 1 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Kharkhoda to improve grid stability and renewable energy integration.

  • Dairy-Linked Biogas: Suzuki Motor Corporation, in partnership with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and local dairy unions, is setting up 10 rural biogas plants across India, three of which are already operational in Gujarat.
