Metacon Secures SEK 111 Million to Build 10 MW Green Hydrogen Production Plant in Sweden

Metacon AB has been awarded up to SEK 111 million in funding through Sweden’s Klimatklivet climate investment program to build a 10 MW green hydrogen production facility in Uppsala. The project will supply renewable hydrogen to industry and the transport sector while serving as a commercial-scale demonstration plant for the company’s hydrogen technology.

The facility will be constructed at Uppsala Vatten och Avfall’s Hovgården waste management site outside Uppsala. The total investment amounts to approximately SEK 202 million, with Klimatklivet covering up to 55% of the project cost.

Once operational, the electrolyser is expected to produce around 1,480 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, helping address the limited supply of renewable hydrogen in central Sweden. The hydrogen will be supplied to industrial customers and hydrogen refuelling stations, reducing reliance on hydrogen transported over long distances from other regions or countries.

The project is designed to operate under commercial market conditions, with demand already supported through letters of intent signed with both local and national customers.

Beyond producing renewable hydrogen, the project has been designed to maximise resource efficiency by integrating with existing operations at the Hovgården site. Oxygen generated during electrolysis will be used in Uppsala Vatten och Avfall’s leachate water treatment process, while surplus heat from hydrogen production will be recovered and used to provide heating within the facility. This integrated approach improves overall energy efficiency and reduces waste.

According to the approved application, the project could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 23,000 tonnes per year, primarily by replacing diesel fuel in heavy transport and reducing emissions associated with transporting hydrogen over long distances.

For Metacon, the plant also represents an important strategic investment. In addition to producing green hydrogen, it will function as a full-scale reference facility where customers and partners can evaluate the company’s electrolysis technology under real operating conditions. The project supports Metacon’s strategy of expanding its position as a supplier of integrated hydrogen production systems and demonstrating the commercial performance of its technology.

Part of the company’s investment has already been supported through the acquisition of assets from Hynion’s bankruptcy estate, announced in late 2025. Metacon noted that the project’s financing requirements are structured so that most of the remaining capital will be needed during later development stages.

Construction is scheduled to begin during the second half of 2026, with commissioning planned for the first quarter of 2029.

As Sweden continues to expand its hydrogen economy, projects such as the Uppsala facility are expected to play an important role in building regional hydrogen supply, supporting industrial decarbonisation, and enabling the transition to zero-emission transport.
