Nel Hydrogen Electrolyser AS, a subsidiary of Nel ASA (OSE), has been awarded a grant of up to €135 million from the EU Innovation Fund to industrialize its next-generation pressurized alkaline electrolyser technology. Currently in the prototype phase, the technology promises to reduce the cost of green hydrogen production, with plans for industrialization at Nel’s Herøya facility in Norway.
“We are excited to receive this significant grant, which will help us accelerate the development and market introduction of our new pressurized alkaline technology,” said Håkon Volldal, President and CEO of Nel. “This is a critical step in driving down the cost of green hydrogen for our customers.”
Nel has been working on this advanced electrolyser technology for over five years. The €135 million grant will support a phased build-out of production, initially targeting 1-2 GW of annual capacity, with the potential to expand up to 4 GW. The development is backed by Enova SF, Norway’s contact point for the EU Innovation Fund, and follows previous support from the Research Council of Norway and Innovation Norway.
“This new technology represents a major leap forward in performance and cost-effectiveness for renewable hydrogen. With the EU Innovation Fund’s backing, we can bring it to market faster and make a substantial impact in the green hydrogen industry,” added Volldal.
Final investment decisions on the production capacity will depend on successful prototype testing, pilot projects, and market acceptance of the new technology.
