EDP’s GH2 Soto project, aimed at producing renewable hydrogen at the Soto de Ribera site, has reached a significant milestone with the approval of its Integrated Environmental Authorisation from the Regional Ministry of Ecological Transition, Industry, and Economic Development of Asturias. This approval enables the development of the project’s initial 5 MW electrolysis capacity, advancing EDP’s vision to transform its thermal power plants into hubs for renewable energy. Project Highlights Investment: Over €20 million, with €6 million in financing from the IDAE (Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving) under the Pioneer Projects programme of the ERHA PERTE framework. Output: Annual production of 600 tonnes of renewable hydrogen to serve industrial applications. Environmental Impact: Prevention of 6,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually. A Key Pillar of EDP’s Green Hub Vision The GH2 Soto initiative is part of EDP’s broader strategy to transform Soto de Ribera into a green energy hub, integrating renewable energy production, energy storage, and system flexibility. This project complements EDP’s larger hydrogen developments in Aboño (150 MW) and Los Barrios (130 MW), positioning the company as a leader in renewable hydrogen production in Europe. Ambitious Goals for Asturias EDP plans to develop up to 1 GW of electrolysis capacity across its transforming sites in Aboño and Soto de Ribera, both recognized as Projects of Common Interest (PCI) by the European Commission. This designation brings: Accelerated planning and licensing processes. Improved regulatory conditions. Simplified environmental assessments. Increased investor visibility and access to CEF funding opportunities. CEO Commentary EDP’s commitment to renewable hydrogen aligns with its mission to decarbonize industrial sectors and energy systems while supporting Europe’s green transition. These initiatives reflect the company’s leadership in advancing impactful, large-scale green hydrogen projects. Transforming the Energy Landscape With the Soto de Ribera project moving forward and additional hydrogen initiatives underway, EDP continues to play a pivotal role in developing a sustainable and flexible energy future, supporting Europe’s ambitions to achieve carbon neutrality.
