Lhyfe, a leader in the production of green and renewable hydrogen, has secured a grant of approximately €11 million (SEK 125.6 million) from Klimatklivet, a Swedish Environmental Protection Agency-backed investment program. The funding will support the construction of a renewable hydrogen production facility in Trelleborg, Sweden's southernmost city and a pivotal transport hub. Trelleborg, recognized as Scandinavia's largest roll-on roll-off harbor, is a crucial gateway where 10% of Sweden's exports and imports are transacted annually. As the transportation and logistics sectors seek cleaner vehicle alternatives like hydrogen-powered electric vehicles, there is a growing demand for green hydrogen to fuel the area's expanding network of refueling stations. The new plant is projected to produce up to four tons of green hydrogen daily from a 10 MW installed electrolysis capacity, significantly contributing to the region's zero-emission goals. Operations are expected to commence in 2027, with the first production of green hydrogen. The grant will cover about 40% of the project's total estimated costs, encompassing development, design phases, equipment supply, and construction activities. Lhyfe stands as a pioneer in utilizing water electrolysis powered by renewable electricity for hydrogen production. Its initial plant in Bouin, France, has been operational since the second half of 2021, and additional sites have been launched in Occitanie and Brittany as of December 2023. Currently, Lhyfe is expanding with five more sites across Europe and employs 195 dedicated staff. The company's project pipeline spans approximately 10 GW in Europe, covering 12 countries. Sara Wihlborg, Lhyfe’s Country Manager for Sweden, expressed enthusiasm about the grant: "We are thrilled to receive this grant, marking our first subsidized project in Sweden. It not only recognizes our expertise in green hydrogen production and delivery but also reaffirms our commitment to Sweden's environmental agenda. This project is pivotal for bolstering green hydrogen supply for mobility in southern Sweden, aligning with our goal to expand green hydrogen use across the nation for both mobility and industrial applications." The realization of this project is contingent upon the approval of necessary operating authorizations, construction permits, and final investment decisions.

Essar Group is set to invest Rs 30,000 crore over the next four years to establish a green hydrogen plant at Jamnagar, Gujarat. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to embrace clean energy technologies and decarbonize its global operations, including its oil refinery in the UK and a new green steel plant in Saudi Arabia. Prashant Ruia, director of Essar Capital, outlined the conglomerate's comprehensive approach which includes decarbonizing its oil refineries, creating a green steel manufacturing facility, and developing an LNG and electric ecosystem for decarbonizing long-haul heavy trucks. The group is also exploring the mining of critical minerals used in electric vehicle batteries and other renewable technologies. The planned green hydrogen plant in Jamnagar aims to develop a hydrogen production capacity of 1 gigawatt along with an associated annual capacity of 1 million tons of green molecules. This ambitious project, termed Essar Future Energy, will leverage 4.5 GW of renewable energy from Essar Renewables to split water molecules, producing hydrogen and oxygen. This hydrogen, a zero-emission fuel, will power vehicles, generate electricity, and heat homes and businesses, significantly cutting 41,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually from the site. Additionally, Essar plans to streamline the production process by creating green molecules that can be transported more efficiently than green ammonia, which traditionally requires conversion back into hydrogen. This innovative approach aims to reduce costs and enhance the feasibility of green fuel exports, particularly in the biofuels sector. The expansion plans also include increasing Essar Power's electricity generation capacity, particularly through renewable energy platforms, to about 10,000 MW in the next 3-5 years. This includes expanding the Salaya-DevBhoomi Dwarka thermal power plant in Gujarat by an additional 1,600 MW to support the region’s base-load energy needs. In terms of green mobility, Essar is developing an LNG and electric truck ecosystem to reduce emissions from long-haul transportation, which includes operating a fleet of 450 to 500 LNG-powered trucks and developing electric trucks for shorter ranges. Furthermore, Essar is enhancing its capabilities in gas production from coal seams and is the leading producer of coal bed methane in India, with plans to significantly increase its gas production. The group is also exploring potential shale gas opportunities in West Bengal. Internationally, Essar plans substantial investments to reduce the carbon footprint of its operations, including a $3.6 billion initiative to decarbonize its Stanlow refinery in the UK and a $4 billion project to establish a green steel plant in Saudi Arabia that utilizes hydrogen.

Glocal Green AS and Norwegian Hydrogen AS have advanced their collaboration by finalizing a cooperation agreement to develop and establish hydrogen production linked to Glocal Green's upcoming bio-methanol facility. This development follows a two-year period of intensive study and discussions since their initial letter of intent. The production of hydrogen will be managed through a new joint venture, demonstrating a synergistic relationship between the two companies. "This agreement marks a significant achievement in our collaborative efforts, promising a win-win situation for both parties and efficiency gains that will benefit the entire value chain, including the market," said Dag Nikolai Ryste, CEO of Glocal Green AS. The planned bio-methanol will be synthesized from low-grade biological residues and by-products sourced from forestry, agriculture, and the marine sector. The integration of hydrogen into the production process will enable the complete utilization of green carbon, effectively doubling the methanol output. This enhanced product is designated as bio-e-methanol. The demand for this environmentally friendly methanol is rapidly increasing, particularly within the chemical industry and as an alternative to fossil fuels in maritime and aviation sectors. "The global power shortage underscores the importance of high transition efficiency. Our innovative approach, which combines bio-waste with hydrogen, optimizes energy use, converting both biomass energy and added hydrogen into a highly efficient output," explained Ryste. The initial project in Øyer, Gudbrandsdalen, aims to produce annually 150,000 tons of bio-e-methanol and will include local production of 15,000 tons of green hydrogen through electrolysis. "This symbiosis exemplifies the potential of combining hydrogen production with bio-methanol manufacturing, enhancing Norwegian Hydrogen AS’s role in the hydrogen sector," stated Jens Berge, CEO of Norwegian Hydrogen AS. This partnership is set to create significant synergies by co-locating hydrogen and bio-methanol production facilities, offering sustainable solutions to meet the growing global demand for green fuels. The collaboration looks forward to leveraging these opportunities both in Norway and internationally, with plans to expand similar projects throughout the Nordic region.
