RWE has been awarded €551 million in funding by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) under the Dutch government’s SDE++ scheme to support its planned 100MW electrolysis plant near the Magnum power station in Eemshaven.
The OranjeWind Electrolyser, which recently secured all necessary construction and environmental permits, will be powered by renewable electricity from the OranjeWind offshore wind farm, a joint development between RWE and TotalEnergies.
“This funding comes at exactly the right time,” said Sopna Sury, COO for Hydrogen at RWE Generation. “It follows the granting of our permits and brings us a major step closer to delivering the OranjeWind Electrolyser, which will play a key role in decarbonising Dutch industry.”
Next steps for the project include Front End Engineering and Design (FEED), selection of construction partners, and securing offtake agreements ahead of the final investment decision.
RWE’s hydrogen strategy
Hydrogen is central to RWE’s long-term investment plans. The company is engaged across the entire hydrogen value chain — from development and construction of electrolysers to global import partnerships. In the Netherlands, RWE is actively pursuing projects in Eemshaven, Rotterdam, and Zeeland, building the foundations for a nationwide green hydrogen economy.
