SAMSUNG E&A and Nel Launch CompassH2: Next-Gen Green Hydrogen Plant for Lowest LCOH

SAMSUNG E&A and Nel Launch CompassH2: Next-Gen Green Hydrogen Plant for Lowest LCOH

SAMSUNG E&A, a global energy solutions leader, has officially unveiled CompassH2, a state-of-the-art green hydrogen production solution developed in partnership with Norwegian electrolyser technology pioneer Nel ASA. Designed to deliver the world’s best efficiency and cost competitiveness, CompassH2 aims to lead the industry in achieving the lowest possible Levelized Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH).

The launch of CompassH2 will take place on 21 May 2025 during the World Hydrogen Summit at Rotterdam Ahoy in the Netherlands.

CompassH2: A New Standard in Green Hydrogen Production

This collaboration between SAMSUNG E&A and Nel merges Nel’s advanced PEM and AWE electrolyser technology with SAMSUNG E&A’s extensive engineering and plant design expertise. The result is a scalable, highly efficient, and fully integrated green hydrogen solution that meets the rigorous demands of industrial-scale hydrogen production.

Key Features of CompassH2:

  • Unmatched System Efficiency
Combining Nel’s industry-leading stack performance with SAMSUNG E&A’s optimized system architecture, CompassH2 significantly reduces both CAPEX and OPEX, delivering the lowest achievable LCOH.

  • System-Level Guarantees
Offers performance guarantees across the full system—not just components—enhancing project bankability and reducing technical risk.

  • Comprehensive Engineering Support
SAMSUNG E&A’s expert team provides end-to-end project support, from initial design to execution and commissioning.

  • Integrated Value Chain Solution
Covers all phases of project development: feasibility studies, EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction), and warranty services, offering a seamless pathway to hydrogen production.

  • Scalable Design
Starting at 100 megawatts, CompassH2 is built to scale based on project requirements and supports high-purity hydrogen output in a compact footprint.

Strategic Industry Positioning

The development of CompassH2 aligns with the growing demand for clean hydrogen in green ammonia, methanol, and e-fuel production—key enablers in decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors such as aviation, shipping, and heavy industry. As governments enforce stricter emissions regulations, scalable and efficient hydrogen technologies like CompassH2 are essential to meeting global climate goals.

Nel brings nearly a century of hydrogen expertise, with commercial deployment of both alkaline (AWE) and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis systems. Their deep technical know-how and ongoing innovation in next-gen hydrogen solutions make them an ideal partner in this strategic collaboration.

A Commitment to a Cleaner Future

SAMSUNG E&A’s launch of CompassH2 supports its broader mission to tackle global challenges through innovation. Under its E&Able strategy, the company is focused on driving:

  • E&Able Low: Low-carbon solutions

  • E&Able Zero: Carbon-free energy systems

  • E&Able Circle: Environmental sustainability and circular solutions

“CompassH2 represents the future of green hydrogen production—flexible, scalable, and designed for the global energy transition,” said a SAMSUNG E&A spokesperson. “Together with Nel, we’re delivering a solution that not only meets today’s demands but anticipates tomorrow’s.”

CompassH2 is set to play a pivotal role in scaling clean hydrogen adoption worldwide—empowering industries to transition toward a low-carbon, resilient energy future.
