ACWA Power, one of the world’s largest developers of renewable energy, desalination, and large-scale green hydrogen projects, has been granted exclusive government approval to export green hydrogen and its derivatives produced in Saudi Arabia to international markets. The mandate also includes the development of renewable electricity export projects, strengthening the Kingdom’s ambitions to become a global clean energy supplier.
Under the authorization, ACWA Power will have the exclusive right to export green hydrogen, green ammonia, green methanol, and other hydrogen-based renewable fuels produced in Saudi Arabia. The company will also be responsible for developing infrastructure to produce, transmit, and export renewable electricity to markets across Europe and the Arab region.
The decision forms part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 strategy, which seeks to diversify the country’s economy while leveraging its vast renewable energy resources to become a leading exporter of low-carbon energy. As global demand for green hydrogen accelerates, the Kingdom is positioning itself as a major supplier of clean molecules for industries seeking alternatives to fossil fuels.
In addition to hydrogen exports, the new mandate supports the development of cross-border renewable electricity infrastructure that could enhance regional energy security while allowing Saudi Arabia to export competitively priced renewable power generated from its abundant solar and wind resources.
ACWA Power is already a key player in Saudi Arabia’s clean energy transition. The company is a leading developer of renewable power projects worldwide and plays a central role in the NEOM Green Hydrogen Project, one of the largest green hydrogen developments currently under construction globally.
Today, ACWA Power manages a portfolio of 111 infrastructure assets across 16 countries, with approximately USD 125 billion in assets under management, covering renewable energy, water desalination, electricity transmission, and hydrogen production.
The new government mandate further expands the company’s role by adding international energy exports to its growing portfolio. Beyond producing renewable hydrogen, ACWA Power is expected to help develop the integrated infrastructure required to transport green hydrogen, hydrogen derivatives, and renewable electricity from Saudi Arabia to global markets.
As Europe and other regions increase demand for renewable hydrogen to decarbonize sectors such as steel, chemicals, refining, shipping, and aviation, Saudi Arabia is seeking to capitalize on its exceptional renewable energy resources and large-scale project development capabilities.
The latest approval reinforces both ACWA Power’s position as a strategic infrastructure partner for the Kingdom and Saudi Arabia’s long-term objective of becoming one of the world’s leading exporters of green hydrogen and other clean energy products.
