Scotland Secures First Green Hydrogen Electrolyzer Manufacturing Hub in Aberdeen as Hydrasun Partners with Nel

Energy solutions provider Hydrasun has signed a major framework agreement with Norwegian electrolyzer manufacturer Nel ASA to establish Scotland’s first manufacturing facility dedicated to green hydrogen electrolyzer assembly and integration in Aberdeen.

Marking its 50th year in business, Aberdeen-founded Hydrasun will invest in new production lines to assemble Nel’s MC Series—a modular, containerized Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyzer platform offered in 1.25 MW and 2.5 MW building blocks for zero-emission green hydrogen production.

Under the agreement, Nel will supply PEM stacks manufactured at its Wallingford facility in the United States to Aberdeen. Hydrasun will then manage the procurement, assembly, and integration of the complete balance-of-plant systems required to deliver turn-key green hydrogen equipment across European markets.

State Support for Green Energy Transition

The new green hydrogen manufacturing hub is supported by £1.9 million from the Scottish Government’s Just Transition Fund (JTF). The investment will create up to 12 new high-skilled clean energy jobs and safeguard an additional 11 existing roles in the North East of Scotland.

Scotland’s First Minister, John Swinney, visited the Aberdeen site to highlight the region’s key role in expanding green hydrogen capacity and clean energy supply chains.

“While we will be continuing to use oil and gas for years to come, I want to ensure that workers here are also the foundation of our clean energy future,” said Swinney. “Scotland is an energy superpower, and the workers, businesses, and communities of the North East will be vital in ensuring we capitalise on our remarkable renewable energy resources.”

Scaling Green Hydrogen Supply Chains Across Europe

For Nel, partnering with Hydrasun establishes a dedicated European integration hub that mirrors its existing North American operations, accelerating the rollout of green hydrogen infrastructure across the continent.

“This agreement marks a defining moment in Hydrasun’s evolution,” said James Gaskell, CEO of Hydrasun. “Establishing Scotland’s first electrolyser assembly and integration facility is a proud milestone… ensuring the city has genuine clean energy manufacturing capability.”

Tushar Ghuwalewala, SVP of PEM Operations at Nel, added that demand for standardized green hydrogen systems is surging: “As demand for standardized, modular systems grows, this collaboration enhances our ability to serve key markets while creating greater flexibility and scalability across our production network.”
