The Smart Hydrogen Hub initiative has selected Enapter’s AEM Nexus 2500 electrolyser as the core technology for a planned green hydrogen demonstration project in the Port of Rotterdam, marking another step toward the development of an integrated hydrogen ecosystem for industry, mobility and maritime applications.
The project, located in Rotterdam’s M4H district, is being developed by Platform Zero, Adsensys, Enapter and a range of public and private partners, including the Port of Rotterdam and InnovationQuarter. The partners aim to demonstrate how renewable electricity, hydrogen production, energy storage, certification and local consumption can operate together as a single, flexible energy system.
Rather than focusing solely on hydrogen production, the demonstrator is designed to showcase the complete hydrogen value chain under real operating conditions. The project will examine how electrolyser operation can respond to fluctuating renewable electricity supplies, how energy storage and control systems can optimise performance, and how certified green hydrogen can be reliably supplied to local users.
The selected AEM Nexus 2500 is Enapter’s latest industrial-scale electrolyser, offering 2.5 MW of electrolysis capacity through a modular design that enables hydrogen production to be expanded in stages as demand grows. The system is also designed to integrate with larger energy management platforms while operating flexibly alongside variable renewable power generation.
The Smart Hydrogen Hub is intended to serve as a testing ground for companies, technology developers, research institutions and public authorities working on hydrogen applications. In addition to hydrogen production, the facility will combine battery energy storage, locally generated renewable electricity, digital energy management systems, certification processes and connections to nearby industrial customers.
By bringing these technologies together at a single location, the partners aim to accelerate the development of Rotterdam’s hydrogen economy while demonstrating practical approaches for deploying scalable hydrogen infrastructure in ports and industrial clusters.
Reliable access to locally produced renewable hydrogen is expected to support industries seeking to decarbonise operations, while also creating opportunities for hydrogen use in heavy transport and maritime applications. The project will also provide a real-world environment where emerging technologies, business models and regulatory frameworks can be tested before wider commercial deployment.
For Enapter, the selection represents another industrial application of its Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) electrolysis technology, which the company is positioning as a modular solution for distributed green hydrogen production.
As Europe’s largest port continues to expand its role as a future hydrogen hub, projects such as the Smart Hydrogen Hub are expected to help demonstrate how integrated hydrogen systems can support the transition to low-carbon industrial and transport sectors.
