SONATRACH, Hecate Energy, and Tosyali Sign Agreement for Green Hydrogen Project to Support Algeria’s Green Steel Industry

SONATRACH, in collaboration with U.S.-based Hecate Energy Global Renewables and Tosyali Iron Steel Industry Algeria SPA, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly carry out studies for the development of an integrated green hydrogen project powered by renewable energy, aimed at supporting the green steel industry in Algeria.

The signing ceremony took place at the Ahmed Ben Ahmed Convention Center in Oran, during the 12th SONATRACH Scientific and Technical Days.

This MoU outlines a two-phase integrated project.

  • Phase one will focus on feasibility studies to assess the project’s viability, potential, and profitability.

  • Phase two will involve the development and deployment of renewable-powered green hydrogen production, specifically to be used in green steel manufacturing.

This new agreement builds upon work already initiated through previous MoUs signed in 2024.

  • On April 29, 2024, SONATRACH and HGR Energy (a subsidiary of Hecate) agreed to assess the feasibility of a renewable energy project in Algeria.

  • On July 24, 2024, SONATRACH and Tosyali signed an MoU to explore green hydrogen production for steel manufacturing at Tosyali’s Algerian steel complex.

This latest collaboration aligns with Algeria’s national strategies for renewable energy and hydrogen development, in which SONATRACH plays a key role. Through an ambitious energy transition program, the company aims to reduce natural gas consumption and cut greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to a more sustainable and decarbonized industrial future for Algeria.
