Statkraft, Europe’s leading renewable energy producer, has been selected by the EU Innovation Fund to negotiate a grant of up to €107 million for its hydrogen and green heating project in Emden, Lower Saxony. The project entails a 200 MW electrolysis plant alongside a 50 MW heat pump system, aiming to produce up to 20,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen and 50,000 MWh of green heat annually.
With the support of the newly launched hydrogen core network, Statkraft’s initiative aligns with Germany’s decarbonization goals, enabling widespread access to green hydrogen for industries across the country and helping decarbonize the local heating sector. Statkraft already provides district heating in Emden through its biomass facility, and this new development will expand its green energy footprint.
“In Emden, we are opening the first chapter of our ambitious hydrogen plans in Germany,” shared Helge-Jürgen Beil, Vice President of Hydrogen at Statkraft. “We aim to become a leading green hydrogen producer in Germany, and EU funding for this project is crucial to our strategy.”
The project has gained traction, with several letters of intent signed by prospective customers for both green hydrogen and green district heating. Additionally, Statkraft is advancing a separate 10 MW electrolyzer pilot at Emden, set to provide hydrogen to regional fueling stations. An investment decision for this pilot is expected by year-end.
“This support validates Statkraft’s innovative hydrogen efforts and is a key step towards our goal of becoming a major green hydrogen player in Europe,” added Bjørn Holsen, SVP of Hydrogen at Statkraft.
