Trinasolar has been selected to supply high-efficiency solar modules for the Good Earth Green Hydrogen and Ammonia (GEGHA) project in New South Wales, Australia, providing the renewable electricity needed to produce green hydrogen and low-carbon ammonia at the state’s first facility of its kind.
Located near Moree, the project is designed as a commercial-scale demonstration of decentralised hydrogen and fertiliser production, showcasing how renewable energy can support lower-carbon agriculture while reducing reliance on imported fossil fuel-based fertilisers.
The facility will feature a 27 MW solar farm equipped with Trinasolar’s Vertex S+ modules, incorporating the company’s n-type i-TOPCon cell technology and dual-glass design. The modules were selected for their durability, resistance to harsh weather conditions and long-term energy performance, helping maximise renewable electricity generation over the project’s lifetime.
Once operational, the GEGHA facility is expected to produce up to 200 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, which will be used to manufacture approximately 4,500 tonnes of low-carbon ammonia each year. The ammonia is intended primarily for the agricultural sector, offering a more sustainable alternative to conventional fertilisers produced using fossil fuels.
Construction of the project is now underway.
Green hydrogen is produced by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity from renewable energy sources such as solar power. When combined with nitrogen, the hydrogen can be converted into ammonia without the significant carbon emissions associated with traditional ammonia production, making it an increasingly important pathway for decarbonising both agriculture and industry.
According to project developer Hiringa Energy, GEGHA has been designed as a model that could be replicated across regional Australia, bringing renewable hydrogen production closer to agricultural demand while supporting local industries.
For Trinasolar, the project highlights the growing role of solar energy in enabling emerging green hydrogen applications beyond electricity generation. Reliable renewable power is a critical component of hydrogen production, and the company’s solar technology will provide the energy foundation for the facility’s electrolysis process.
As Australia continues to expand its renewable hydrogen industry, projects such as GEGHA demonstrate how solar energy, green hydrogen and low-carbon ammonia can be integrated to support emissions reductions in sectors that have traditionally relied on fossil fuels.
