Trollhättan Chosen as Site for Libra Horizon’s First Green Hydrogen Plant in Sweden

Libra Horizon, a joint venture between Scandinavian Horizon and EnBW Sweden, has announced that Trollhättan will be the site of its first large-scale green hydrogen facility. The 5 MW plant will produce up to 775 tons of green hydrogen per year, helping reduce more than 9,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually. The hydrogen will serve both industrial users and the transport sector, two of the most challenging areas to decarbonize.

“Launching our first project in Trollhättan is a deliberate choice,” said Mads Miltersen of EnBW Sweden. “The city has an energy utility that dares to innovate and a municipality that leads with ambition. Together, we can show how hydrogen can become an integrated part of a resilient and sustainable energy system.”

Trollhättan: A hub for innovation and clean energy
The city was selected for its strong innovation culture and commitment to climate leadership. The involvement of Trollhättan Energi, a pioneer in sustainable energy, ensures that the project becomes part of a broader integrated system. Waste heat generated during hydrogen production will be fed into the district heating network, maximizing energy efficiency and circular use.

“We are in the midst of an energy transition where flexibility is key,” said Pia Brühl Hjort, CEO of Trollhättan Energi. “By combining district heating, electricity, and hydrogen, we can balance energy use, strengthen our infrastructure, and enable more renewable energy while supporting Trollhättan’s continued growth.”

Smart grid integration for flexible production
One of the project’s defining features will be its flexible operation strategy. By utilizing available grid capacity during off-peak periods, the facility can optimize hydrogen production without displacing other users. This approach enhances cost efficiency, grid stability, and renewable integration.
