The U.S. National Clean Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap have emerged as a comprehensive framework to harness the potential of green hydrogen in achieving national decarbonization goals. This strategy explores the diverse opportunities presented by hydrogen across various sectors of the economy and lays out a roadmap for scaling up production and utilization of clean hydrogen in the coming decades.
The document provides a current snapshot of hydrogen production, transport, storage, and usage in the United States while presenting a strategic vision for large-scale adoption of clean hydrogen. The strategy analyzes potential scenarios for 2030, 2040, and 2050, outlining the pathways to leverage hydrogen as a key driver of sustainable growth and emissions reduction.
One of the core aspects of the strategy is the recognition of the need for collaboration among different stakeholders. The federal government agencies, industry players, academia, national laboratories, state and local communities, Tribal communities, environmental and justice organizations, labor unions, and various stakeholder groups are urged to work together to accelerate progress and enable the market liftoff of clean hydrogen. By establishing concrete targets, market-driven metrics, and tangible actions, this roadmap aims to measure success and drive advancements across sectors.
The development of the Strategy and Roadmap was in response to the legislative requirements outlined in section 40314 of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), also known as the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (Public Law 117-58). The draft version of the report was made available for public comment in September 2022, allowing stakeholders to provide valuable feedback. This input, combined with further analysis on market liftoff and extensive engagement with federal agencies and the White House Climate Policy Office, helped shape the final version of the report.
To ensure ongoing progress and alignment with evolving needs, the Strategy and Roadmap will undergo regular updates every three years, as mandated by the BIL. These future iterations will provide additional opportunities for stakeholder engagement, ensuring that the strategy remains dynamic and responsive to changing circumstances and emerging technologies.
The U.S. National Clean Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap serve as a milestone in the country’s journey towards decarbonization. By capitalizing on the immense potential of clean hydrogen, the United States aims to advance a sustainable and resilient future, foster economic growth, and contribute to global efforts in combatting climate change. With collaborative efforts and a clear strategic vision, the nation is well-positioned to embrace the transformative power of clean hydrogen and drive the transition to a cleaner and more sustainable energy landscape.
