In one of Europe’s largest eSAF (electric Sustainable Aviation Fuel) supply deals to date, energy major Uniper has signed a binding long-term offtake agreement with Arcadia eFuels to secure 40,000 metric tons of green hydrogen-derived synthetic aviation fuel annually.
Under the agreement, Uniper will purchase power-to-liquid eSAF produced at Arcadia eFuels’ flagship Project Endor facility in Vordingborg, Denmark. Deliveries are expected to begin in the early 2030s, contingent on facility commissioning and standard conditions precedent.
The 40,000-tonne annual volume is equivalent to powering approximately 1,000 long-haul flights between Düsseldorf and Abu Dhabi on a Boeing 787-9.
Power-to-Liquid Technology and Emission Reductions
Arcadia eFuels manufactures its synthetic aviation fuel using self-produced green hydrogen, captured carbon dioxide, and renewable electricity. The resulting power-to-liquid fuel delivers up to a 98% reduction in lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions compared to standard fossil jet fuel.
It is fully compliant with the European Union’s ReFuelEU Aviation mandate and meets RFNBO (Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin) regulatory standards, providing a drop-in solution for long-haul commercial aviation without requiring modifications to existing aircraft engines or airport fueling infrastructure.
“This agreement brings long-term demand and new supply together, helping to create the conditions for a competitive European eSAF market,” said Michael Lewis, CEO of Uniper. “For Uniper, it is an important step in building a strong position in a market with significant growth potential.”
Amy Hebert, CEO of Arcadia eFuels, added: “Securing long-term offtake from a sophisticated energy partner like Uniper validates our solution, de-risks our capital strategy, and accelerates our path to production at scale.”
Cross-Border Energy Transition
The deal signing in Düsseldorf was attended by Mona Neubaur, Minister for Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Action and Energy of North Rhine-Westphalia, alongside Anette Galskjøt, Consul General of Denmark in Hamburg, highlighting the cross-border industrial cooperation between Germany and Denmark.
The agreement provides Arcadia eFuels with the long-term revenue certainty required to advance construction and capital financing for its Danish production plant, while establishing Uniper as an early market leader in Europe’s emerging synthetic e-fuel supply chain.
