Wood Awarded FEED Contract for Zeevonk Green Hydrogen Facility in Rotterdam

Wood, a global consulting and engineering leader, has been awarded the front-end engineering design (FEED) contract for the Zeevonk hydrogen facility in Rotterdam, Netherlands. This facility will be powered by offshore wind and floating offshore solar from the Zeevonk offshore developments and will play a crucial role in Europe’s clean energy transition.

The Zeevonk project is a joint venture between Vattenfall, a major European energy company, and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), the world’s largest dedicated greenfield renewable energy investment fund manager through its Energy Transition Fund (CI ETF I). The project aligns with Vattenfall’s net-zero goals and supports Europe’s 2050 climate targets.

Hydrogen to be Integrated into Rotterdam’s Energy Infrastructure

Once operational, the Zeevonk hydrogen facility will be designed to reach significant peak production, with hydrogen transported via pipeline to the Hydrogen Network Rotterdam. This network serves as the first phase of the Netherlands’ new hydrogen infrastructure, centered in the Port of Rotterdam, one of Europe’s most important energy hubs.

Leaders in Green Hydrogen Development

Gerry Traynor, President of Projects Eastern Hemisphere at Wood, emphasized the company’s expertise in large-scale green hydrogen projects:
“We are thrilled to deliver this next phase of the state-of-the-art energy system at Zeevonk, applying our extensive expertise in large-scale green hydrogen projects, which are crucial to the world’s energy transition. Wood is delivering a design that maximizes value engineering and applies our operability knowledge, ensuring a reliable and cost-effective solution. Our role in this project underscores our commitment to delivering low-carbon solutions and expanding the accessibility of clean energy worldwide.”

Claus Vissing-Jørgensen, Project Director at Zeevonk, highlighted the significance of the FEED contract:
“We are excited to collaborate with Wood to bring our hydrogen vision to life in the Netherlands. This contract marks a major milestone for our large-scale hydrogen plant in the Maasvlakte area. Over the next 10 months, the FEED will provide detailed cost estimates and lay the foundation for our upcoming EPC tender process in Q2 this year.”

Wood’s Expanding Role in Green Hydrogen

This marks Wood’s third major project with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners. The company is also acting as owner’s engineer for CIP’s Coalburn Storage project in Scotland, set to be Europe’s largest battery storage unit, and is providing engineering services for CIP’s Catalina green hydrogen project in Spain.
