Uniper and Electric Hydrogen Partner to Develop 200 MW Electrolyzer for Green Wilhelmshaven Project

Uniper has selected Electric Hydrogen as its exclusive partner to design a cutting-edge 200 MW electrolyzer plant, a cornerstone of Uniper’s Green Wilhelmshaven project in Northern Germany. The collaboration marks a significant step in advancing large-scale green hydrogen production in Europe, with Electric Hydrogen commencing preliminary front-end engineering design (pre-FEED) work in October 2024.

Transforming Wilhelmshaven into a Hydrogen Hub

The Green Wilhelmshaven initiative is comprised of two key components:

  1. Large-Scale Electrolysis: Powered by renewable electricity from wind farms, this system will produce green hydrogen at Uniper’s former coal-fired power plant site.
  2. Ammonia Import Terminal: Located near the existing LNG terminal in Wilhelmshaven, this facility will import and process ammonia as a hydrogen carrier.

Both projects are strategically connected to Germany’s hydrogen backbone and underground storage infrastructure, positioning Wilhelmshaven as a central hub for the country’s green hydrogen economy. The initiative has been granted “Project of Common Interest” (PCI) status by the European Union, underscoring its importance for Germany’s and Europe’s decarbonization goals.

Supporting Industrial Decarbonization

The zero-carbon hydrogen produced by the electrolyzer will enable Uniper’s industrial customers in sectors such as chemicals, steel, marine, and air transport to transition toward carbon neutrality. The Green Wilhelmshaven project is poised to meet a significant portion of Germany’s green hydrogen demand, supporting the country’s ambitious climate objectives.

Leadership Commentary

Susanne Thöle, Director of Hydrogen for Uniper, emphasized the project’s transformative potential:

“We aim to drive the efforts to decarbonize German and European industry. Uniper’s hydrogen project is a cornerstone of our plans to shape the energy transition. We’re excited to begin pre-FEED work on this project with Electric Hydrogen, a partner who understands our goals and supports our vision. Our aim is to be the most trusted partner for policymakers, industry, and society in delivering secure, affordable, and steadily greener energy.”

A Vision for the Future

By leveraging Wilhelmshaven’s strategic location and infrastructure, Uniper is spearheading the transition to a green hydrogen economy in Germany. The partnership with Electric Hydrogen ensures the deployment of advanced electrolyzer technology, setting the stage for scalable, sustainable hydrogen production that supports industrial decarbonization and energy security in Europe.
