OMV is moving forward with the construction of its new Innovation Hub at the Schwechat site in Austria, a major investment aimed at accelerating the development of next-generation energy and industrial technologies, including green hydrogen solutions. The project has now reached the topping-out phase, with construction approximately 55% complete and commissioning planned for the first half of 2027. Once operational, the facility will serve as a central platform for scaling innovations from laboratory research to pilot testing and ultimately full industrial deployment within OMV’s production network. The company is investing around €65 million into the site, which will cover more than 8,000 square meters and include laboratories, technical testing areas, pilot facilities, office space, and collaboration zones. The hub is designed to support the rapid development and commercialization of emerging technologies linked to OMV’s long-term decarbonization strategy. A major focus of the center will be technologies connected to the energy transition, including green hydrogen, carbon utilization, biotechnology, and other low-carbon industrial processes. Dedicated pilot areas with advanced safety systems will allow OMV to test new concepts under near-industrial conditions before integrating them into larger-scale operations. OMV says the facility will strengthen its ability to move technologies more quickly from research stages into commercial use, while also supporting the company’s broader Strategy 2030 goals and climate ambitions. The Schwechat Innovation Hub will bring together multidisciplinary teams from across the company, alongside external partners and customers, to develop scalable solutions for the future energy market. According to OMV, the site is intended to become a key technology accelerator for the company’s transition toward more sustainable operations and products. By building infrastructure specifically designed for innovation and industrial scaling, OMV aims to position Schwechat as an important center for clean energy technology development in Europe.
