H2sea has been selected by the Carbon Trust’s Integrator Programme to lead the H2PD (Offshore Hydrogen Production Platform Design) project—an important step in developing scalable, offshore green hydrogen production. This strategic initiative will explore the design and feasibility of hydrogen platforms capable of producing green hydrogen at capacities of 500 MW and beyond, supporting the transition to a low-carbon energy future.
The Integrator Programme, backed by leading renewable and energy companies—including SSE Renewables, ScottishPower Renewables, Vattenfall, EnBW, Shell, and TotalEnergies—aims to maximise the potential of offshore wind as a flexible and cost-effective contributor to net-zero energy systems.
The H2PD project builds on the Carbon Trust’s mission to catalyse clean energy innovation by fostering collaboration between industry pioneers. Through this initiative, H2sea, in partnership with HSM and Enersea, will deliver a comprehensive feasibility and design study for large-scale offshore hydrogen production platforms.
The study is organised into four key phases:
-
Market Screening: Evaluation of emerging offshore hydrogen production technologies and identification of commercial opportunities.
-
Technical Design: Development of scalable platform concepts that prioritise safety, efficiency, and environmental sustainability.
-
Regulatory Review: Assessment of UK, German, and international maritime regulations to map viable development pathways and streamline approval processes.
-
Strategic Advisory: Delivery of recommendations to inform policy frameworks, future investments, and roadmap strategies for offshore hydrogen production.
“We are honoured to collaborate with the Carbon Trust’s Integrator Programme on this pioneering project, with support from our partners HSM and Enersea,” said Edwin van Drunen, CEO of H2sea. “The H2PD study will lay the foundation for scalable offshore hydrogen solutions, reinforcing renewable energy innovation in the North Sea and beyond. By combining offshore wind and hydrogen production, we’re advancing a powerful synergy for accelerating the clean energy transition.”
This project underscores the growing role of offshore hydrogen production as a cornerstone in the global shift to green energy. H2sea’s involvement signals a shared industry commitment to innovation, sustainability, and scalable infrastructure for future-proof energy systems.
