Hydrogen Hub in Haugesund: New Green Hydrogen Plant to Boost Industrial Decarbonization in Norway

A powerful new partnership has emerged in Haugesund, Norway, with Karmsund Hydrogen—a joint venture between Norwegian Hydrogen, Sigma, and Karmsund Group—teaming up with HydePoint to establish a cutting-edge green hydrogen production facility. The plant will be located at the Karmsund Group’s Service Base, offering strategic access to both maritime and land-based hydrogen consumers.

With an electrolysis capacity of 20 MW, the facility is expected to produce over 3,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, playing a pivotal role in reducing emissions from local industry and maritime operations.

“As a locally rooted company, we’re proud to take tangible steps toward hydrogen production in Haugalandet. This project helps build new green value chains and ensures our industries remain competitive in a low-emission future,” said Marie Aanensen, Chair of the Board at Karmsund Hydrogen and CEO of Karmsund Group.

Industry-Driven, Regionally Anchored

The project is a direct response to local industrial demand, supporting the region’s transition to clean energy and strengthening Haugalandet’s ambitions to become a hub for green growth. With hydrogen produced and consumed locally, the plant will decarbonize vital sectors while boosting the maritime economy through sustainable fuel solutions.

“This initiative shows how strong industrial collaboration can drive real emissions cuts,” said Jens Berge, CEO of Norwegian Hydrogen. “Haugalandet has all the right ingredients to become a center for green industry, and we’re excited to help turn that vision into reality.”

Flexible, Maritime-Oriented Technology

Technology partner HydePoint brings a modular, maritime-focused hydrogen production system that combines floating barge-based solutions with shore-side infrastructure. This enables scalable, demand-driven deployment—a practical fit for coastal industries and shipping.

“Our maritime hydrogen technology is built for flexibility and efficiency,” said Elin Steinsland, CEO of HydePoint. “This partnership allows us to apply it where it matters most—directly at the point of use.”

First Hydrogen in 2028

The project is already engaging with local maritime and industrial customers to ensure alignment between production capacity and offtake needs. With a targeted launch in 2028, the facility is expected to become a model for regional decarbonization and energy innovation.
