Sunfire to Supply Two 100 MW Electrolyzers for Major Green Hydrogen Projects in Spain

Sunfire, a global leader in electrolysis technology, has been selected to deliver two large-scale 100 megawatt (MW) electrolyzer systems for renewable hydrogen projects in Spain. The projects will be developed by Repsol—Spain’s largest hydrogen producer—in partnership with Enagás Renovable, as well as by Petronor, which is jointly owned by Repsol and Kutxabank.

The first electrolyzer will be installed near Repsol’s industrial complex in Cartagena, while the second 100 MW plant will be located at Petronor’s refinery in Muskiz, near Bilbao. Together, the projects represent a significant expansion of Spain’s industrial-scale green hydrogen capacity.

“Spain offers outstanding conditions for green hydrogen, and we recognized that potential early on,” said Nils Aldag, CEO of Sunfire. “We are proud that Repsol is once again relying on our proven pressurized alkaline electrolysis technology to scale renewable hydrogen production. This collaboration reinforces Spain’s leading position in the hydrogen transition.”

Industrial-Scale Hydrogen Production Using Proven Technology

For each project, Sunfire will supply ten pressurized alkaline electrolyzer modules, each rated at 10 MW. The systems will be fully integrated into existing refinery operations and connected to the regional hydrogen infrastructure. Once commissioned in 2029, each facility is expected to produce up to 15,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per year using electricity from renewable sources.

The green hydrogen will be used to decarbonize fuel production at Repsol’s industrial sites, significantly reducing the carbon intensity of essential energy products. Each project is expected to avoid up to 167,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually.

Sunfire’s selection builds on its growing track record in Spain. The company has already delivered a 10 MW pressurized alkaline electrolyzer to the Basque Hydrogen project, led by Petronor, EVE and Enagás Renovable, which is currently being installed at the Port of Bilbao. The new 200 MW order highlights Sunfire’s ability to deliver reliable, scalable solutions for large industrial applications. Beyond Spain, Sunfire also holds major references, including a 100 MW electrolyzer order from RWE in Lingen, Germany.

Supporting Spain’s 2030 Hydrogen and Decarbonization Targets

The two projects form a core part of Repsol’s roadmap to replace conventional hydrogen with renewable hydrogen across its industrial assets. At the same time, they support Spain’s national decarbonization goals for 2030 by accelerating the development of the renewable hydrogen market, reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels, and strengthening long-term energy security.
