Norwegian Hydrogen and GreenIron Expand Partnership to Scale Fossil-Free Metal Production

Norwegian Hydrogen AS and GreenIron H2 AB have expanded their collaboration beyond their initial agreement announced in October 2024. The new strategic partnership will see the two companies co-locate and develop green hydrogen production plants alongside GreenIron’s direct reduction furnaces at multiple sites.

GreenIron’s patented process uses green hydrogen to reduce metal oxides without producing CO₂ emissions, enabling fully fossil-free metal production. Norwegian Hydrogen will leverage operational experience from its hydrogen plant in Hellesylt, Norway, along with new capacity currently being developed to supply GreenIron’s first full-scale facility in Sandviken, Sweden.

By integrating hydrogen production directly with industrial processes, the companies aim to accelerate decarbonization in the steel and metals sector, while also creating opportunities for hydrogen use in surrounding industries.

“This agreement strengthens our ability to deliver integrated, fossil-free solutions to key players in the steel and metals sector. Together with GreenIron, we are creating a scalable model for hydrogen-based industrial transformation, building on experience from our existing plants and collaboration,” said Jens Berge, CEO of Norwegian Hydrogen.

The partnership underscores the potential of combining hydrogen infrastructure with innovative industrial applications to drive tangible progress toward Europe’s green transition.
