Klaipėda Port’s green hydrogen ambitions have taken a decisive step forward following the successful factory testing of its electrolyzer in Italy. This milestone confirms the project is on track for completion, bringing Lithuania closer to producing and supplying clean hydrogen fuels for maritime and industrial use.
“Successfully completing the factory tests of the green hydrogen electrolyzer is a major step forward for Klaipėda Port in its plans to produce, use and supply clean fuels. This milestone brings us much closer to finishing a unique project in the region and reducing our environmental footprint,” said Algis Latakas, General Director of Klaipėda State Seaport Authority. He added that the equipment will be shipped to Klaipėda for installation and on-site testing, with hydrogen production scheduled to begin next year.
The hydrogen station at Klaipėda Port will feature a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyzer capable of producing around 127 tonnes of green hydrogen annually at full capacity. Part of this hydrogen will power Lithuania’s first vessel fueled by green hydrogen, which is now nearing completion.
The electrolyzer is being manufactured at the IMI Remosa facility in Cagliari, Italy. Once delivered, the system will be installed and tested at Klaipėda, with construction works expected to finish by February next year.
With this development, Klaipėda Port is set to become the first location in Lithuania—and one of the first in the Baltic States—to produce and distribute green hydrogen. The project aligns with global decarbonization efforts, addressing greenhouse gas emissions while promoting energy transformation and innovation in the region.
The hydrogen production and refueling station is being built under Lithuania’s Economic Recovery and Resilience Plan, supported by the European Union’s NextGenerationEU program. The total project value is approximately €12 million, with €6 million provided through EU funding.
