Ameresco to Lead Design and Construction of UK’s First Green Hydrogen Program in Consumer Goods Sector with Kimberly-Clark

Ameresco, Inc. (NYSE: AMRC), a global provider of energy solutions, has signed a major contract with Kimberly-Clark UK to act as Engineering Service Provider for the country’s first green hydrogen program in the consumer goods sector. Kimberly-Clark—manufacturer of well-known brands such as Andrex® and Kleenex®—is breaking new ground as the first large consumer goods company in the UK to make a substantial commitment to green hydrogen technology. The initiative will be implemented at its sites in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, and Northfleet, Kent.

Under the partnership, Ameresco will support the design and construction of five dual-fuel hydrogen/natural gas boilers across both facilities. The project includes the development of new and refurbished boiler houses and supporting infrastructure, with integration to upcoming hydrogen production facilities. This setup will allow the boilers to primarily consume hydrogen while maintaining natural gas as a backup fuel.

Expected to be fully operational in 2027, the boilers will cut natural gas use by 50% and deliver an estimated annual reduction of 28,500 tonnes of CO₂ emissions.

Mark Apsey MBE, Senior Vice President at Ameresco, highlighted the importance of the collaboration:
“We are thrilled to partner with Kimberly-Clark on this groundbreaking initiative within the industrial sector. Hydrogen is pivotal for decarbonising industries with moderate to high process temperature requirements, and Ameresco’s experience in delivering sustainable energy solutions positions us well to drive this project forward.”

This partnership represents a major step for Kimberly-Clark’s sustainability strategy and underscores the UK’s growing focus on industrial decarbonisation through green hydrogen adoption.
