European Energy has entered a balancing and optimization partnership with Centrica Energy for the Måde green hydrogen facility at Port Esbjerg. Under this agreement, Centrica will manage power output from two on-site wind turbines, directing surplus renewable energy to hydrogen production.
The Måde facility is powered by 12 MW of electrolysis capacity, supported by two wind turbines at the Måde Wind Turbine Test Center, with a combined output of 16 MW. The renewable electricity from these turbines will enable the production of approximately 1,500 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. European Energy has also arranged hydrogen offtake agreements with Port Esbjerg and a global industrial gas supplier. Additionally, the excess heat from the hydrogen production process will be repurposed for local district heating, exemplifying effective sector integration across electricity, fuel, and heating.
“Integrating wind power with green hydrogen production at Måde represents a substantial advancement in decarbonizing key economic sectors,” said Emil Vikjær-Andresen, EVP of Power-to-X at European Energy. “This collaboration with Centrica underscores our commitment to sector coupling and sustainable fuel innovation.”
The partnership is also a key milestone for Centrica, expanding its portfolio of renewable and flexible assets across Europe. Kristian Gjerløv-Juel, Centrica’s VP of Renewable Energy Trading & Optimisation, stated, “The energy transition demands a multi-faceted approach, including electrification and innovative decarbonization solutions for sectors where electrification alone is insufficient.”
He added, “Our expertise in trading and managing renewable assets has been built over 20 years. We’re excited to partner with European Energy on this project and look forward to further collaborations as the green energy landscape continues to evolve.”
