Enapter AG (ISIN: DE000A255G02) has announced receiving significant orders for its AEM Nexus 1000 electrolyser, marking a stride in green hydrogen production. This electrolyser, known for its multicore technology, is designed for efficient green hydrogen production on an industrial scale without relying on the rare and expensive metal iridium. This feature allows clients to confidently plan their expansion without future resource constraints. CFFT SpA, a logistics company operating a harbor near Rome, has placed an order for three 1 MW AEM Nexus multicore-class units. These electrolysers will power a hydrogen refueling system with renewable energy, marking Enapter's largest single European order to date. Additionally, F.i.l.m.s SpA, a metalworking firm specializing in hard metal parts, has ordered a 1 MW AEM Nexus 1000 electrolyser to produce green hydrogen on-site, aiding in the transition away from conventional hydrogen and natural gas towards sustainable alternatives. Valued in the upper seven-figure euro range, these Italian contracts underscore Enapter's strength in the market, highlighting a growing trend towards sustainable energy production. CEO Jürgen Laakmann expressed that these successes in Italy reflect Enapter’s capability to meet the demand for scalable, iridium-free electrolysers, providing crucial support for companies aiming to contribute to the energy transition.

SSAB has made significant progress in the application process with the U.S. Department of Energy for funding up to $500 million. This funding could enable the construction of a HYBRIT® facility in Montpelier, Iowa, capable of producing carbon-neutral iron sponge using green hydrogen instead of fossil fuels. Additionally, the project will explore expanding capacity and incorporating renewable energy sources at the steel plant. Chuck Schmitt, head of SSAB Americas, expressed enthusiasm about the project's selection for grant negotiations, highlighting the market's growing demand for sustainable products. This initiative aligns with American industrial benefits and supports U.S. goals for transitioning to renewable energy, complementing legislative efforts such as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act. In January 2022, SSAB's board made a strategic decision to transition its Swedish and Finnish production systems to carbon-neutral steel manufacturing. Since 2021, SSAB has begun delivering small quantities of fossil-free steel produced from green iron sponge at the HYBRIT pilot plant in Northern Sweden. In 2023, SSAB introduced SSAB Zero, a product made from recycled steel scrap using green energy, nearly eliminating CO2 emissions in the process.

Finavia, the Finnish airport operator, has taken a groundbreaking step by joining the Finnish hydrogen cluster in January 2024, marking its commitment to promoting sustainable aviation in Finland. In a pioneering move in Europe, Finavia is also participating in an international EU project to test the use of hydrogen in maintenance equipment at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport. Henri Hansson, Finavia's Head of Technology, Responsibility, and Safety, emphasized the company's preparation for hydrogen use and the necessary infrastructure to meet the needs of both the airport's operations and its airline and business partners. This commitment aligns with the national hydrogen cluster's goal to energize Finland's hydrogen economy. By integrating Finavia's airports and air traffic into the country's hydrogen ecosystem, Finavia is leading the way in innovation for the application of new fuels in European aviation. The key to reducing aviation emissions lies in replacing conventional jet fuel with carbon-free alternatives derived from renewable resources, such as hydrogen. As part of the Baltic Sea Region HyAirport international project, Finavia is the first in Europe to trial hydrogen as a fuel for heavy airport maintenance equipment at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport. This initiative has received a €4 million grant from the EU, providing valuable insights for future aviation needs, including potential hydrogen-powered aircraft. Finavia's sustainability director, Mikko Viinikainen, highlighted the project's role in setting new standards for airports in handling, storing, and distributing hydrogen. The Baltic Sea Region HyAirport project involves retrofitting a Finnish-made brush blower engine with a piston engine that runs on gaseous hydrogen, paving the way for potentially hydrogen-powered heavy snow removal machines in the future. Finavia envisions a future where low-emission technologies coexist at airports, with current maintenance equipment already utilizing renewable fuels and plans for the electrification of small and medium-sized vehicles. The heaviest machinery will explore hydrogen-powered solutions, tested in the ongoing project. This transition towards sustainable aviation won't happen overnight, as the aviation industry's development work and the safe introduction of new solutions take time. However, Finavia is determined to lead the charge towards a sustainable future for aviation, aiming to achieve net-zero carbon emissions from its operations across 20 airports in Finland by 2025.
