Plug Power Inc. (NASDAQ: PLUG), a global leader in hydrogen solutions for the green hydrogen economy, has secured a contract with H2DRIVEN, a joint project by Dourogás and CapWatt, to provide Technical Evaluation Phase (TEP) support for 25 megawatts (MW) of its Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Electrolyzers. This collaboration will focus on advancing the Front End Engineering Design (FEED) process for H2DRIVEN’s green methanol project in Portugal.
Building on its successful Basic Engineering and Design Package (BEDP) for larger-scale projects, Plug has introduced a TEP offering to support projects using multiple 5 MW PEM electrolyzer units. The TEP provides clients with essential technical insights and support to guide them through project development, permit acquisition, and funding applications, while also mitigating risks to ensure informed Final Investment Decisions (FID). This offering mirrors Plug’s BEDP, delivering key technical expertise to help customers successfully execute their projects.
The H2DRIVEN project aims to produce 80,000 tons of green methanol annually by combining synthesis gas from biomass gasification with green hydrogen produced through water electrolysis, powered by solar energy. The resulting sustainable methanol will serve heavy industry and mobility sectors, contributing to the transition to cleaner energy.
The FEED process will involve close collaboration between Plug and H2DRIVEN, with Plug providing critical support on its PEM electrolyzer technology throughout the TEP. “This agreement underscores our leadership and expertise in PEM electrolyzer technology,” said Andy Marsh, CEO of Plug Power. “With the world’s largest PEM electrolyzer plant and extensive real-world experience, we are well-positioned to provide the technical support needed to advance this project.”
H2DRIVEN aims to strengthen the national economy by driving innovation, increasing exports, and reducing dependency on external markets. The project will also support the EU’s technological sovereignty while contributing to reducing emissions by 105 kilotons of CO2 annually by 2027.
Following the successful completion of the TEP, the project will move to the FID phase, with H2DRIVEN targeting full operational status by the end of 2026.
