Port of Gothenburg Opens Sweden’s First Hydrogen Refueling Station for Heavy-Duty Vehicles

A major milestone for sustainable transport was achieved this weekend with the opening of a hydrogen refueling station for heavy traffic at the Port of Gothenburg. Strategically located adjacent to one of the port’s busiest gates—Gate 6—the new station exclusively supplies green hydrogen and serves one of Sweden’s most truck-heavy areas.

“The large volume of trucks passing through the port, combined with the ability to refuel work machinery, makes this location perfect for a hydrogen refueling station. With the addition of several charging stations, heavy transport at the Port of Gothenburg is now fully equipped to transition to both electric and hydrogen power,” said Viktor Allgurén, Head of Innovation at the Port of Gothenburg.

Gate 6 leads directly to the Gothenburg RoRo Terminal, where an estimated 400,000 heavy vehicles pass through annually. With the relocation of Stena Line’s Germany and Denmark terminals to nearby Arendal in the coming years, this number is expected to rise further.

The station, operated by Hydri, is part of the company’s broader initiative to develop a nationwide hydrogen infrastructure, with plans for around 20 additional hydrogen stations across Sweden by 2025. This station is partially funded by the Swedish Energy Agency.

“Green hydrogen has immense potential to drive the decarbonization of heavy transport. This station marks an important step forward in creating a carbon-neutral transport sector,” said Michel Thomas, CEO of Qarlbo Energy and Chairman of the Board at Hydri.
