PowerCell Advances Marine Sustainability with H2Marine EU Project

PowerCell has joined forces with the H2Marine EU project, a significant initiative aimed at advancing the development of the most powerful marine fuel cells. This 42-month project is focused on pioneering hydrogen solutions, emphasizing the creation and testing of fuel cells designed specifically for marine applications. It involves a comprehensive process of designing, developing, testing, and deploying Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell stacks that can produce 250-300 kW of electricity.

Launched officially in January 2024, the project’s consortium comprises 13 members, including companies and research institutes, coordinated by CERTH (The Centre for Research & Technology-Hellas). It has secured a total of 7.5 million euros in funding from the European Commission as part of Horizon Europe under the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, co-funded by the European Union (EU) and the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research, and Innovation (SERI).

The project’s vision is to advance the technology in fuel cells optimized for the challenging conditions of marine installations. PowerCell, with its vast experience in delivering marine products and its established position in the sector, will contribute its technical expertise and state-of-the-art fuel cell technology to this endeavor.

“The H2Marine project enables us to enhance our existing fuel cell platform in a segment where we are already a frontrunner. We possess validated and certified technology for marine applications, offering us significant opportunities for advancement,” states Lisa Kylhammar, SVP Engineering at PowerCell. “I am confident that our collaboration with other consortium members, combined with our profound industry knowledge, will facilitate a quicker transition towards a green marine industry.”

Improvements in fuel cell technology are expected to create synergies across various industries. The project aims to open new market opportunities and contribute to the future sustainability of the marine sector. PowerCell anticipates applying the insights gained to other customer segments, offering products with even greater sustainability and reliability.
