SAMSUNG E&A, a total solutions provider for the global energy sector, has announced its full-scale entry into the green hydrogen market with the acquisition of a 9.1% stake in Norwegian hydrogen technology company Nel ASA for approximately $33 million. The deal also includes a strategic partnership agreement to advance hydrogen production technology and expand business opportunities in the green hydrogen sector.
The signing ceremony took place at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Houston, USA, attended by Hong Namkoong, President and CEO of SAMSUNG E&A, and Håkon Volldal, CEO of Nel ASA.
Strategic Collaboration for Green Hydrogen Expansion
Founded in 1927 and headquartered in Norway, Nel ASA is a global leader in hydrogen technology, offering both alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) and proton exchange membrane electrolysis (PEM). The company has extensive project experience worldwide and is actively developing next-generation high-performance electrolyser solutions.
Through this partnership, SAMSUNG E&A aims to integrate Nel’s electrolysis technology into its hydrogen production plants, enhancing its capabilities in the green hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, and e-fuel markets. The company also plans to expand its business into electrolyser installation and operations, positioning itself as a leader in the growing hydrogen sector.
Advancing the Global Energy Transition
Hydrogen electrolysis is a key gateway technology for producing green ammonia, green methanol, and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)—all of which are critical to global decarbonization efforts and emissions reduction mandates in key markets. With demand for low-carbon marine fuels and industrial hydrogen rapidly rising, SAMSUNG E&A sees this investment as a long-term strategic move to establish a dominant position in the green hydrogen industry.
Commitment to Sustainable Energy Solutions
SAMSUNG E&A has outlined its commitment to sustainability through its threeE&Able strategy, focusing on:
E&Able Low – Low-carbon solutions
E&Able Zero – Carbon-free innovations
E&Able Circle – Environmental sustainability initiatives
Hong Namkoong, President and CEO of SAMSUNG E&A, emphasized the company’s commitment to innovation:
“We will continue to proactively secure technologies in the energy transition field, such as hydrogen and carbon neutrality, through technological investment and collaboration. Our goal is to create a virtuous business cycle by attracting high-value EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) projects based on technological solutions.”
Strengthening the Green Hydrogen Market
With this strategic investment in Nel ASA, SAMSUNG E&A is reinforcing its position as a major player in the green hydrogen economy, further accelerating the global transition to renewable and sustainable energy solutions.
