Stargate Hydrogen Solutions Partners with Finland’s VTT to Advance Green Hydrogen Technology

Stargate Hydrogen Solutions OÜ is setting its focus on Finland as a strategic base for hydrogen innovation in Northern Europe. Strengthening its position in the region, Stargate has partnered with VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd to accelerate the development and deployment of advanced hydrogen solutions.

With Finland emerging as a hub for large-scale industrial hydrogen projects, Stargate sees significant potential to contribute to Europe’s climate goals. “Finland is rapidly becoming a leader in green hydrogen projects,” said Rainer Küngas, Chief Technology Officer at Stargate Hydrogen. “This country offers exciting opportunities for green hydrogen production and for pioneering decarbonization technologies in hard-to-abate sectors.”

Strategic Partnership for Innovation

Stargate’s collaboration with VTT marks a crucial step in its Northern European strategy. Through this partnership, Stargate will leverage VTT’s world-class facilities to test and develop its next-generation alkaline electrolysers. This collaboration enables accelerated product validation under real-world conditions, meeting the growing demand for reliable, large-scale hydrogen solutions.

“VTT’s testing capabilities are critical for refining our products to industrial standards,” Küngas stated. “This partnership underpins our expansion in Finland, where we’ve already established a subsidiary and are executing multiple commercial projects.”

Momentum in Finland

Stargate’s focus on Finland has already yielded significant progress. Earlier this year, the company was selected as the alkaline electrolysis technology supplier for a megawatt-scale containerized project by Fortum. The first Stargate electrolysis stacks have already been delivered to Finland, marking a milestone in its commercial efforts.

Finland’s robust infrastructure, ongoing hydrogen projects, and openness to innovation make it an ideal location for Stargate’s expansion. By scaling up its alkaline electrolyser technology, Stargate aims to meet the growing demands of industrial and utility customers across Europe.

Goals of the Collaboration

The partnership between Stargate and VTT focuses on three key objectives:

  1. Cutting-Edge Testing: Conducting real-world validation of large-scale electrolyser prototypes at VTT’s advanced test facilities.
  2. Collaborative R&D: Leveraging combined expertise in system modeling and fluid dynamics to enhance hydrogen technology efficiency and durability.
  3. Path to Market: Positioning Finland as a central hub for testing and scaling commercial hydrogen solutions for Europe.

Olli Himanen, Research Team Leader for Hydrogen Production at VTT, emphasized VTT’s expertise: “We’ve been working with hydrogen, electrolyzers, and fuel cells since 1998. By expanding our capabilities, we aim to support European electrolyser manufacturers with world-class testing and development facilities.”

Scaling Up for the Future

As the demand for industrial-scale hydrogen solutions increases, Stargate’s partnership with VTT ensures it is well-positioned to address the needs of major industrial players. This collaboration not only strengthens Stargate’s presence in Finland but also supports Europe’s transition to a sustainable, low-carbon future.
