Elcogen Secures €24.9 Million EU Innovation Fund Grant to Scale Green Hydrogen Technology

Elcogen, a leading European manufacturer of technology for efficient green hydrogen production and emission-free electricity, has been awarded a €24.9 million grant from the European Union’s 2024 Innovation Fund.

The grant will accelerate Elcogen’s efforts to expand manufacturing capacity for its solid oxide electrolyser cell (SOEC) and solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technologies in Estonia. This scaling initiative aims to support Europe’s energy transition by enabling the efficient production of green hydrogen.

A Commitment to Clean Energy Innovation

The EU Innovation Fund, one of the world’s largest funding programs for low-carbon technologies, will award €4.8 billion to 85 projects in 2024. These initiatives aim to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 476 million tonnes of CO₂ over the next decade, targeting areas such as renewable energy components, hydrogen production, energy storage, and deep decarbonization technologies.

Elcogen was selected for its innovative approach and ability to contribute to the EU’s green hydrogen production value chain. The project’s evaluation considered factors such as capital expenditure (CAPEX), scalability, and alignment with Europe’s decarbonization goals.

Driving the Energy Transition

Enn Õunpuu, CEO of Elcogen, expressed gratitude for the grant:
“We are honoured to receive this recognition and support from the European Union. This grant reflects the EU’s dedication to building a competitive and sustainable green hydrogen production value chain. Scaling up is critical to addressing the challenges of the energy transition.”

Stefano Piscitelli, COO of Elcogen, emphasized the company’s pivotal role in Europe’s green energy transition:
“This award reinforces Elcogen’s position as a leader in efficient, affordable green hydrogen technologies. Our advanced facility will play a key role in enabling Europe to meet its decarbonization targets and transition to sustainable energy solutions.”
