Stargate Hydrogen has officially opened its new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility dedicated to the production of advanced alkaline electrolysis stacks and systems, marking a significant milestone in its mission to make green hydrogen affordable and scalable for hard-to-decarbonise industries such as steel, fertilisers, and chemicals.
The inauguration event, held in Estonia, was attended by Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal and Hydrogen Europe CEO Jorgo Chatzimarkakis, alongside leading figures from the clean energy sector. This factory positions Stargate Hydrogen as a key industrial player in Europe’s green hydrogen ecosystem.
Backed by funding from the Republic of Estonia through revenues generated by the EU Emissions Trading Scheme, the facility launches with an annual production capacity of 140 MW of alkaline electrolysers. The modular setup allows for rapid scaling to 1 GW+ with only minor additional investment. The factory is already fulfilling orders for customers across Europe, the Middle East, Türkiye, and India.
“Stargate Hydrogen’s IPCEI project is a textbook example of how targeted public funding can spark transformative industrial innovation,” said Jorgo Chatzimarkakis, CEO of Hydrogen Europe. “The materials research and engineering taking place here are vital for building Europe’s hydrogen economy and achieving strategic energy sovereignty.”
Designing for sustainable growth, Stargate Hydrogen has taken a modular, phased approach to scaling—choosing a brownfield site with a flexible layout to avoid the pitfalls of oversized, idle gigafactories. This strategy ensures cost efficiency and aligns production with real market demand.
“There are electrolyser factories today that sit idle while burning through capital,” said Marko Virkebau, CEO of Stargate Hydrogen. “We’ve taken a smarter path—scaling as the market demands and as our next-generation technologies reach commercial readiness. Our production is fully booked through 2025, and we are now seeing accelerating demand from new regions in Asia and the Middle East.”
The opening ceremony was held within the company’s production hall, surrounded by stacks and turn-key electrolysis systems in active assembly, including systems destined for Fortum and other major clients.
At a time when many energy companies are downsizing or exiting the market, Stargate Hydrogen is taking a bold step in the opposite direction—expanding capacity through a financially sustainable, demand-driven model.
About Stargate Hydrogen:
Founded in 2021, Stargate Hydrogen is developing innovative, cost-effective green hydrogen technologies for sectors that are difficult to decarbonize. By using ceramic catalysts and a patented alkaline stack design, the company aims to boost electrolyser efficiency and reduce costs. With over €50 million in funding and IPCEI (Important Project of Common European Interest) status, Stargate is scaling production to meet global demand. Key clients include Fortum, Utilitas, ABB, Rockfin, and others across Europe, Türkiye, and India.
