Plug Power Inc. (NASDAQ: PLUG), a global leader in integrated hydrogen solutions, has delivered its first 10-megawatt (MW) GenEco™ electrolyzer array to Galp’s Sines Refinery in Portugal — marking the launch of Europe’s largest proton exchange membrane (PEM) hydrogen electrolyzer project.
The delivery is the first of ten arrays that will be installed on site by early 2026, bringing the total electrolyzer capacity to 100 MW. Once fully operational in the first half of next year, the system will produce up to 15,000 tons of renewable hydrogen annually, replacing 20% of the refinery’s current grey hydrogen use and reducing CO₂ emissions by around 110,000 tons per year (Scope 1 and 2).
Andy Marsh, CEO of Plug Power, emphasized the milestone:
“This collaboration with Galp demonstrates that large-scale hydrogen is ready today. The Sines project will serve as a model for Europe’s refining industry and beyond.”
Ronald Doesburg, Galp’s EVP for Industrial, added:
“Half of global grey hydrogen demand comes from refineries and chemical plants. With this first 100 MW, we are beginning the decarbonization of our Sines refinery — a decisive step for Galp and the sector as a whole.”
Galp announced its plan in 2023 to invest €650 million in a 100 MW green hydrogen unit and an HVO/SAF unit at Sines. Construction began shortly after the final investment decision and is progressing according to schedule.
Plug’s GenEco system integrates a global supply chain, drawing on manufacturing expertise in both the U.S. and Europe, ensuring scalability to meet rising demand. The project also benefits from Plug’s strengthened oil and gas capabilities following its acquisition of Frames Group, a company with more than three decades of expertise in process systems and energy infrastructure.
Europe remains one of Plug’s most strategic markets. The company is advancing multi-gigawatt electrolyzer projects in Spain, the U.K., and elsewhere, supported by a $2 billion global project pipeline. In Q2, global electrolyzer demand contributed $45 million in revenue, led by over 230 MW of GenEco deployments across Europe, Australia, and North America.
